Activities for the next presidential election have got a notch higher with the debut of a group that describes itself as “Osinbajo Volunteers”, stating that its mission is for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to succeed his principal come 2019.
On its website, the group featured the activities of the erstwhile Acting President, asserting that it wants Osinbajo to stand as presidential candidate in the 2019 election.
On Friday, the Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had not disclosed his decision regarding running for second term, but revealed that he and some governors alongside ministers have constituted themselves into ‘Buharist Group’.
He told State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the President that their major objective is to ensure that Buhari presents himself for the 2019 election. Earlier, the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, while pledging her support to ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, disclosed that Buhari told APC leaders that he was only going to serve for one term.
But in a veiled reference to certain presidents, past and present, who had been described as “clueless”, the Osinbajo Volunteers stated that Nigeria now has a “leader (in Osinbajo) who has a clue on what to do and turn Nigeria the beloved to the land of our dreams”.
While calling on members of the public to volunteer for Osinbajo, the group however made it clear on its website that they are not acting at the behest of the current Vice President.
“Note that Osinbajo did not endorse this volunteer group. We have never met him. We are strong believers in the fact that he is the right ruler for Nigeria and must create a peoples volunteer base for him,” the volunteer group said.
