Sokoto and Zamfara State governments have completed the repairs of the 214 km Sokoto-Gusau federal highway in the North-west zone of Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Sokoto on Monday by Imam Imam, the spokesperson to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

The road, which connects Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina all through to Kaduna states, was fixed at the cost of N100 million, Mr. Imam stated.

“The two states combined resources to fix the road as it is the main link between their capitals and other parts of the country,” the statement said.

“It is one of the most important roads in the North West because it connects to other routes leading to neighbouring Niger Republic.”

It explained that while Zamfara shouldered the responsibility for fixing the Gusau -Tureta portion of the road, Sokoto provided funds for fixing the portion between Tureta and Sokoto town.

The statement said a submission would be made to the federal government for refund.

“The important thing is to achieve zero pothole on the crucial route and this has been achieved.

“The effort has enhanced safety of vehicles and commuters. It has also improved movement of goods especially agricultural products because it is a major agricultural zone in the federation,” the statement added.

It is supposed to be federal government doing the job. That can't be disputed since it is federal road which they collected tax money to maintain. At the same time states can't wait for idiots at Aso Rock to figure out this out. States pretty much have to fix it and wait for refund.

The federal government needs to be transparent on what they get and do with money. Then figure out what to do be it tolls or tax increase. As long as they actually do their job nobody will honestly care.

I hope say SE Govs dey hear this.

If the FG can no longer perfom its duties that it now gives to states why do you fight restructuring which is about giving the states more responsibilities which the FG has failed to live up to?

Impressive, it's no news that we just got out of a recession and period of austerity in which the FG was challenged with limited funds for capital projects.

For both state governments to have gone into alliance to fix this strategic road from the limited resources they had (which could have been looted anyway), they deserve commendation.

Kudos Govs Tambuwal and Yari...setting examples for the perpetual marginalization and victim criers.

Most don't know federal government actually owes a few states money for federal road projects. You could Google any state see governor of that state complaining. Akwa says it owed  over N140 billion.

100m naira? which means the road was actually in a good shape.
Gov Obi and Obiano spent about 49billion naira to reconstruct some sections of Onitsha-Enugu highway,till date they have got no refund. how many States can do that? There is no doubt that SE roads are neglected by FG. whether Tambuwal or Yari or any body construct a FG road or not, it can't erase the fact the FG has marginalized SE in,at least, the area of FG road construction.

Terrible argument on too many levels. Roads are public good not entitlement programs. The commercial value doesn't mean anything because the government taxes the population regardless of the commercial value. Why exactly would you argue for irresponsible government.
