Last year President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker used his annual speech to admit Europe was at a crisis point. “Do we want to let our Union unravel before our eyes?” he asked parliament. “Or do we say: Is this not the time to pull ourselves together?” One year on, how will he assess the state of the union? What could the future of Europe look like?

Every September the head of the commission uses this moment to take stock of the year and to lay out the goals for the months to come.
