For me, the preverbial camel's back was broken by the Agatu massacre. Nigeria govt reaction was most appalling to say the least. To know that same killings are still going on, and the govt seems to b more troubled by protesting youths in d east is just nauseating.

The truth about whatever dance is that it is only a manifestation of a far deeper truth: which is that there appears to be a dangerously deep animosity of the core north against some northern minority (esp Christians), parts of the south, but strongest against the southeast. The root of this angst/fear or whatever it is, I haven't conclusively determined but I have two working hypothesis: either it stems from the massacre of nzeogwu coup and the way Aguiyi-Ironsi handled the first military govt, or it is the older strategy of ethno-religious cleansing having its roots in Islamic fundamentalism.

Eitherway whatever is left of the nationalism idea is continually sacrificed by hatred and counter hatred agitations and 'dancings'. Let's face it. Do we still really have a nation? As I type this, I sit in UCH, a premier teaching Hosp that doesn't have a single functioning CT scanner! If Awolowo or Azikiwe were here today, will they boldly say this is the Nigeria they fought for? Some may wonder y ppl like me and Achebe say 'There was a country.' Its because this contraption, zoo, banana republic, Nigeria, whatever u choose to call it, is not really a nation (in the true sense of the word) as it is.

There seems to b a sharp faultline in north-south value system. While generally south is pro-life, pro-development and progressive, north is pro-status quo, or even backward. No real consensus/nationalism is possible wen opinions and actions are moving in opposite directions.

Some of us peacefully do our jobs, use the naira and sing the anthem not because everything is alright but because it is the wise thing to do for now. Personally, I still have some hope in the countryside. But I must confess, this hope is bashed with every wrong decision (such this so-called dance), and every soul needlessly wasted!
