Our bricks production factory is located in Abuja. At SLEEK BRICKS, we produce different types of bricks ranging from hydraform bricks to Lego bricks to MYIB bricks. We also produce U mold bricks for conduit wiring and plumbing & half bricks to prevent wastage.

MOTIVATIONS

We are fascinated and motivated few years back about the unique selling point of compressed red bricks compared to other building materials for mansory. Nigerian bricks expert will say:

With bricks, you can save 30% from the cost of building

They will further add that you can save more if you dig laterite soil from septic tank and well.

How true is this?

#FACTS#
>>> From our experience, we have come to realize that saving cost on brick housing does not come with the bricks itself. In fact, it cost more to get those quality red bricks even if it is done @ your site.
Considering the size of bricks to sandcrete blocks, 3 bricks is equivalent to 1 block. Here is the analogy, if it will take 4000 blocks to complete a project, it will take at least 12,000 bricks to complete the same project.

CALCULATION: The size of blocks in inches is 9 ×9×18 breadth, height and length while the size of brick is 4×12 height and length. The parameters required is just height and length. Thus (9*18) ÷ ( 4*12) = 3.3.

Saving cost comes during the building process. And this is possible because of eliminations. Elimination of mortar, in and out plastering. Labour cost is cheap because of fast construction and few mansons.

CALCULATION:

COST ANALYSIS INVOLVE BETWEEN BUILDING WITH HOLLOW CEMENT BLOCK AND INTERLOCK BRICKS.

Case study of a 3 bedroom flat: (Using hollow cement blocks)

**BLOCKS
It requires about 4000 blocks to build a 3 bedroom flats.
Cost of 1 block (vibrated) = #220.00
Total cost of 4000 blocks = #880,000.00

**MORTAR
Cost of mortar used in laying the blocks;
Using cash build calculator. The size of a block is 18 by 9 inches surface area which is equivalent to 0.4572 by 0.2032 meters.
Since we are using 4000 blocks. The total surface area is (0.4572 * 0.2032 * 4000) = 371.612 sq meter
It will require 68 bags of cements and 10tons of sand to lay the blocks
A bag of cement = #3,500, thus 68 bags of cements (68 * 3,500) = #238,000
20 tons of sand = #45,000

**PLASTERING
Cost of plastering the house; if the plastering is 12mm thick
It will require about 52 bags of cements and 20 tons of sand to plaster in and out
Cost of cements (52 * 3,500) = #182,000
20 tons of sand (very smooth) = #40,000

**WORKMANSHIP (bricklayer)
Bricklayer charges #50 per block, so to lay 4000 blocks, it will cost about #200,000

The sum total amount requires as analyzed above is about #1,585,000.00

There are several other expenses that will be incurred during construction.

*wood form work for lintel, lintel construction which require steel reinforcement, granite, sand and cement,
*columns and beams.
*Screeding & Painting.
* Brick tiles for perfect finishing.


INTERLOCK BRICK BUILDING

MAKING BRICKS
Since the surface area of the interlock bricks are 9 by 4/inches unlike hollow cement blocks.
Thus it will require about 12,000 bricks.

We will use wheelbarrow to calculate the quantity of soil that will be used.
1 bag of cement to 4 wheelbarrows of laterite will produce 70 interlock bricks
Thus it will take about 685 wheelbarrows (70tonnes) to produce 12,000 bricks.

70 tonnes of good laterite is 14000*7= #98,000



Amount of cements required
1 bag to 70 bricks, since we are producing about 12,000 bricks, it will thus require about 171 bags of cements
Total cost of cement 3,500 * 171= #551,200



From factory, the cost of each brick is #130. Thus, #130*12,000= #1,560,000

Workmanship for arranging interlock bricks is #10, so to arrange 12,000 bricks, it will cost #120,000

Total cost of laying interlock bricks to finish is about #1,680,000.00.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN QUALITY RED COMPRESSED INTERLOCKING BRICKS?

1) Since construction with RED BRICKS require no plastering both in and out, It must be aesthetically pleasing at the point of production unlike sandcrete blocks.

##The tapered edges on all the 4 sides must be balanced. It is usually 45 degree such that when bricks are laid, the grooves will aligned in V shape horizontally.

##The sides of each bricks must be smooth. You can determine the smoothness by feeling it with hand.

N.B Rough bricks will affect the beauty of the structure.

2) Since bricks require no mortar to be laid, it must be accurate in terms of dimensions

For hydraform, the side measuring 115mm must be accurate

For lego bricks, the side measuring 100 or 80 mm must also be accurate.

Although, there is room for +/- 2 mm tolerance in case of dimensional accuracy.

3) Hardness Test: After bricks has been fully cured, pick up 2 pieces and struck them together, then sound produced should be clear bell ringing sound and brick should not break. Then it is said to be good brick.

4) Scratch test: A good brick should resist scratches against sharp things. So, for this test a sharp tool or finger nail is used to make scratch on brick. If there is no scratch impression on brick then it is said to be hard brick.

5) Structure test: Good bricks must have smooth, even and homogenous particle size. All these can only be achieved by proper crushing, sieving and mixing of materials before production. A brick might be smooth on the surface but has defect internally.

To know the structure of brick, pick one brick randomly from the group and break it. Observe the inner portion of brick clearly. It should be free from lumps and homogeneous.

6)Breaking test: Pick a brick randomly, hold it to your chest (about 43inches/110cm), drop to the floor (not concrete floor). It should not break.
