Senate Promises To Probe Attack On IPOB by OrientDailyNews: 5:20pm On Sep 27, 2017

The Nigerian National Assembly resumed from its annual vacation on Monday with a promise to investigate the recent attack by soldiers on the home of the leader of the Independent People of Biafra [IPOB], Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and his members.

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who made the pledge assured that the matter would be dealt without fear or favour. He said the Nigerian military should allow themselves to be guided by their training which emphasizes respect for human rights, even in war.

According to Saraki, given the nature of the particular situation, where many innocent lives were lost, the military has every reason to be hesitant in the use of force. He also said the federal government should not over-stretch the military. “We need to protect our military against dissipation of their fighting strength. And this means we need to strengthen the police and equip them with the capacity to deal with civil crisis.”

The National Assembly, he stressed, is already reviewing the Police Act, and is also looking at the possibility of enabling other para-military agencies to help in curbing civil unrest and maintenance of law and order.

He commended political and religious leaders, including Nigerians in the diaspora who have worked hard to ensure that the crisis did not spread to other parts of the country. “I therefore call for continued efforts to sustain peace, unity and stability in all our communities so as to ensure that all residents, no matter their religion, tribe and creed remain protected and safe under the law,” the senate president stated

He also indulged commentators and information managers on all media platforms to be conscious of the need, at all times, to maintain the unity of the country. “They must refrain from circulating information that has the potential for aggravating the crisis. We must all protect and strengthen our country rather than contributing to her collapse and disintegration,” he said.

He said it is important that the federal government realized the goof by both the military and the governors, and settled for legal pronouncement in the proscription of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). On the issues agitating peoples’ mind in the constitution review, the Senate President explained that the exercise would be continuous.

“We intend to keep that promise by further taking decisions that would strengthen and improve on our structures. Upon this resumption, the 8th National Assembly will be addressing all those issues that are agitating the minds of our people and over which they feel so strong,” he stated.
