Finally, twitter has announced it's doubling its character limit from 140 to 280. Giving extra space for online harassment or more space to express your thought.


Aliza Rosen, a Twitter product manager, said that the company was responding to the frustrations of verbose users, and that the change should encourage more people to tweet.

“In all markets, when people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting,” she wrote on the company’s blog.

Twitter is in a competitive battle with rivals such as Facebook and Google in the scrap for market share in digital advertising.

Although, only a 'small group' of users have automatically gained access to the experimental feature, one twitter user @Prof9 says you can “force enable” 280-character tweets by doing the following:

Download and install the Tampermonkey plugin from the google chrome store
Follow the github link and click the Raw button
Select Install on the next page

It's not perfect, as it only works when you access Twitter through a browser on desktop, but is still a handy workaround.

@Prof9 says it seems to stop working when you switch pages too, but will function properly again after a quick refresh.

However, following his post, twitter quickly rolled out a fix for the web client hack.
