INTRODUCTION
Mechanical wave motion is the
occurrence of waves on the surface of a
body.
For example, If a stone is dropped into a
calm lake or pool, a series of expanding
ripples appears to radiate from the splash
center.
However, If you observe some bits of
matter floating up-and-down bobbing
motion as the waves move across the
surface of the water.
Which means, the waves travel steadily in
the same direction without any
corresponding transport of the water
floating water.
The bulk matter through which a wave
propagates acts as a medium for the
transport of energy and momentum, even
though no part of the bulk matter
participates in the long range motion of
the wave
CHARACTERISTICS OF WAVES
1. Wave propagation can take in systems
that are one- dimensional, two-
dimensional and 3- dimensional in
character.
A disturbance that propagates along a
taut string or spring is a one-dimensional
.
Waves on the surface of a body of water
are two- dimensional waves.
A pressure disturbance(sound wave)
that propagates through air is a three-
dimensional wave.
2. Waves can be classified according to
the type of motion that the medium
undergoes.
If the displacement of the medium is at
right angle to the direction of
propagation of the wave, the wave is said
to be transverse.
Example: if a taut horizontal string is
flipped up-and-down, a transverse

disturbance will propagate along the
string.
If the displacement of the medium us back and
forth(parallel) along the direction of propagation
of the wave, the wave is said to be longitudinal or
compressional waves.

WAVE FUNCTION

Wave function of a pulse is the mathematical
expression that describes the wave disturbance
and its propagation as a function of time.
The quantity U=KX-VT or KX+VT or vice versa is called the phase of the
wave.

Thanks for sharing out your view but boss.
Progressive waves have a function of
Kx+or-Vt
depending on what the questions says.
Some are even
Vt-Kx.
If you make use of college physics or university physics you will fully understand mechanical waves.

The main purpose for the diverse representation of wave function is because the bulky material producing the wave don't move. so it the wave it self that move in either direction as given.
Sorry, if u are still in secondary school then u don't need to go beyond ur level but it is better to fully understand the topic .
visit this thread often so that I can upload a PDF on the topic for u to verify.

Bros calm down. Because I nor snap am keep? U wrote U=X-VT, where in physics is that dimensionally correct?Just accept your mistake and move on. Abi u wan challenge me for here? The use of plus or minus depicts the direction of motion of such a travelling wave or as u would prefer, "Progressive wave"
