Why do IPOB and others insist on the Nigerian government to give a referendum date?

Shouldnt the best action be for the various pro-biafra groups come together, print ballot materials and encourage people to cast a vote, independent of the Nigerian government?

This is what was done in the new Kurdistan where the Kurds voted, they never waited for the Iraqi government and today the Catalans are conducting a similar vote, not waiting for the Spanish government to give them a date.

I mean a proactive step needs to be taken. Conduct the referendum first and whether it is considered mock or real will be a subject of debate.

The Catalans are even using photocopied materials to vote for pete's sake.

Strictly speaking, only the government of the nation can organize a referendum. Unfortunately, even If Buhari wanted to organize a referendum, he couldn't. The constitution of the Federal Republic and the oath of office of the President makes sure that he can't.

If he attempted it, he could be impeached and jailed.

hummmmmm which means the best way to go about it is though the house. let their senator push the demand from the house, and if they refuse , the people should commence a recall process .The recall will be easier than anyone can think considering the crowd Kanu influences

The Government will not recognise the outcome of such referendum

Thank you very much for this insight. So many people forget that as a President of Nigeria, you are sworn to an oath to protect the sovereignty of the country, of which you stand to be impeached if you don't. And if you are not impeached, trust me, that's an invitation for a coup

That will be unconstitutional & Undemocratic , and any attempt to use the outcome will be unacceptable to the international community as they will support any action taken by the Zookistanis Government against the referendum.
that is why Nnamdi KANU is demanding it from those who wrote the Constitution

They have no political support simple. They haven't elected a single person that is sympathetic towards the cause. It's possible but IPOB don't care for tangible steps.
