Movie studios book their release dates well in advance, so it’s not too soon for us to start making predictions about which movies are going to blow us away in 2018. But before we get to that, let’s have a quick look back at the world of cinema in 2017, and see which movies hit their mark, and which flopped faster than the first cake you ever tried to bake.
2017 hasn’t been a bad year for movies and has brought us titles like Wonder Woman, It, Dunkirk, The Fate of the Furious, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Alien: Covenant, and John Wick: Chapter 2. But then there are the movies we thought would do well but didn’t, like
Power Rangers, Ghost in the Shell, and
Baywatch . Audiences only want the best and with so much on offer, movie studios need to keep upping their game all the time.
2018 looks like a great movie year so far with a pleasing blend of tried and tested universes combined with a few interesting remakes and original film ideas. Action and fantasy titles seem to be taking the lead for the year ahead, so here are our top picks for films you should see in 2018:

15. Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War might just be the most anticipated movie of 2018 and with a cast including Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Scarlett Johansson, Benicio del Toro and Tom Holland (to name just a few) it’s not hard to see why! The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will see the Avengers joining forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy to battle Thanos, and stop him from amassing the Infinity Stones. The film is intended to be a sequel to 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and will be set four years after the events that took place in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2. If you’re a fan of the MCU, we suggest you book your tickets early – Avengers: Infinity War will be exploding on the big screen in May 2018.

14. Han Solo: A Star Wars Story

There are many stories still to be told in the Star Wars Universe, and this year fans of the franchise can look forward to something different. This standalone instalment looks set to center around a young Han Solo and his adventures with his furry partner Chewbacca before he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars (1977). This prequel will be the second Star Wars Anthology film, following the 2016 film
Rogue One. Alden Ehrenreich ( Hail, Caesar!, Rules Don’t Apply, Beautiful Creatures ) has been chosen to take on the lead role, beating out a staggering 3000 other actors who applied for the role, including Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, and Blake Jenner. Taking on the lead female role will be GoT queen
Emilia Clarke, and the film will also feature Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

13. Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Were you a fan of the first two Maze Runner films? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that the third film Maze Runner: The Death Cure , is scheduled for release early next year. The film is based on the final book in the Maze Runner trilogy, so it will also be the final movie in the franchise.
Filming for The Death Cure began in early 2016 but ground to halt when leader actor Dylan O’Brien was injured on set. While filming a stunt he was accidentally hit by a vehicle, which resulted in a facial fracture, concussion, and multiple lacerations. Although not life-threatening he required months to recover, which resulted in the film schedule being set back considerably. But thankfully he’s made a full recovery and the film will be out early next year.

12. Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

Walt Disney Pictures looks set to cash in on the success of the first Wreak It Ralph film, which was a huge hit with kids and their parents, who loved the arcade type feel. This time the storyline will center around Ralphs adventures in the Internet data space after a Wi-Fi router gets plugged intto the arcade. Director Rich Moore believes we have lots to look forward to adding that the original movie “barely scratched the surface” in terms of the video game world they’ve envisioned. The film will also feature all the Disney Princesses, including Jodi Benson as Ariel, Paige O’Hara as Belle, Irene Bedard as Pocahontas, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Kelly Macdonald as Merida, Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Queen Elsa, and Auli’i Cravalho as Moana – all reprising their roles from previous films and feature characters like C-3PO, R2-D2, Yoda, Princess Leia, Iron Man and Gamora. Sounds like fun!

11. Tomb Raider

The movie poster is already doing the rounds on social media (and gathering mixed reactions) so that must mean it’s official – Tomb Raider is headed for a reboot. However, the story is not going to be based on the Angelina Jolie films, rather on the 2013 video game of the same. Alicia Vikander will be starring as the feisty Lara Croft and the film will also feature Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Dominic West. You might remember Vikander from her roles in films like
Testament of Youth, Ex-Machina (for which she received Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations) and The Danish Girl , which won her the Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. We’re interested to see what she’s going to do with this role.

10. Deadpool 2

As soon as the credits rolled for
Deadpool, fans of the smart-mouthed anti-hero were already hungry for the sequel and the good news is that
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for release in June 2018, so you only have a few more months to wait. Ryan Reynolds will play the lead role again (obviously – there is no one else that could pull it off) but this instalment will have a new director as Tim Miller, who directed the first film, left the project last year due to “creative differences” with Reynolds. Taking over from him will be David Leitch, who directed films like John Wick and Atomic Blonde . We’re also going to be seeing Josh Brolin taking on the role of Cable so this one promises to be amazing!

9. Mission Impossible 6

We haven’t seen the last of Ethan Hunt just yet! And Tom Cruise has promised fans that they won’t be disappointed when the sixth instalment of the Mission: Impossible film series hits the big screen in July 2018. Apparently, he’s been working on some of the stunts for the film for years and he thinks they are going to blow us away. Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin and Sean Harris will all be reprising their roles from previous films, but there will be some fresh faces too as Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett Vanessa Kirby, and Sian Brooke will be joining the franchise. So we’ve got exciting new stunts, fresh faces, and old favorites to look forward to. No details on the plot yet, but it sounds like it can’t miss, so grab the popcorn and accept the mission.

8. Aquaman

Finally! A superhero movie that your girlfriend will be begging to see. Why? Because set to take on the lead role as Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman is none other than GoT star Jason Momoa . Filming for the sixth movie instalment in the DC Extended Universe has already begun and Aquaman is set to be released just in time for Christmas in 2018. And there will be eye candy for the guys too – with
Amber Heard taking on the role of Mera – the Queen of Atlantis. The cast will also include Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Dolph Lundgren (yes he’s still around). Not much is known about the plot at this early stage, but we do know that Aquaman, the reluctant ruler of Atlantis will find himself caught between the needs of his own people and those of the land dwellers.

7. Pacific Rim: Uprising

It’s been ten years since the Jaegers victory at the Battle of the Breach and the program has grown into the most powerful defense force humanity has ever seen. The oceans are still for now, but there’s a feeling of restlessness in the air and the agency needs to be ready to deploy at any moment. They also need to train up the next generation of pilots to battle the Kaiju’s when they return…
Pacific Rim only received lackluster reviews from American moviegoers, but it was a box office hit with the global audiences which means that there’s going to be a sequel. Charlie Hunnam, who played a lead role in the first film, will not be reprising his role due to a scheduling conflict (the man is demand) but it will include stars like John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona and Jing Tian, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.

6. Bad Boys 3: For Life

Okay, so it’s been 15 long, long, long years since we last saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in a Bad Boys movie, so to say that we are anxious for the next installment would be the understatement of the year. But is Bad Boys 3 actually going to happen? Sadly the only answer we have for you is maybe.
The production of this film has been plagued by masses of problems and, as a result, the release date just seems to be getting pushed back. But there have been reports that a new writer has been brought in to work on the script and there is even talk about a fourth movie for this franchise so we aren’t ready to give up hope just yet. Maybe, if we are very lucky, 2018 will be the year for Bad Boys 3: For Life .

5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

It may seem unlikely that there could be a sequel to the 2015 Jurassic World, seeing as how the park was completely overrun by dinosaurs, but it’s happening, although it might be slightly different to what we are used to seeing from the franchise. According to the producers, the series is “not always gonna be about a Jurassic Park” hinting that future films in the franchise may not involve a theme park at all. Might they even explore a world that humans and dinosaurs co-exist? Details on the plot are sketchy, so we can’t say just yet, but we do know that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be reprising their roles and that Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role from the original 1993 movie. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is scheduled for release in June 2018.

4. Ready Player One

With so many movie franchises and universes, it’s hard for an original film to grab our attention, but we’re pretty sure that Ready Player One looks set to do just that. It’s a sci-fi adventure movie based on the book by Ernie Cline’s 2010 bestselling book and takes place in the year 2045 when most of Earth’s inhabitants live in slums due to overpopulation, corruption, and climate change. To escape their miserable existence the people plug themselves into a virtual reality world where they can pretend to live meaningful lives. The film is being directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, T. J. Miller and Mark Rylance. The premise sounds intriguing and we think this just might be the most exciting original film in 2018.
