There is a popular saying that goes thus “First Impression Matters Most”. This also means that what people think and know about you at first goes a long way in drawing conclusion about who you are. So, it is very important to create a very good impression about yourself in the mind of the person(s) who will interview you for a job.

Making a good impression at a job interview can land you a job. So, here are some ways to make good impression at a job interview:

Dress Smart For The Job Interview: At a job interview, you outward appearance goes a long way in appealing the person(s) interviewing you. Determining the exact clothing to wear can be tricky as dress codes vary. In many office settings, a suit is the recommended attire. For others, the dress depends on the targeted position, so research (e.g., contact HR, ask a friend who works at the company, and peruse LinkedIn profiles) to decide what to wear, leaning toward classic rather than trendy colors and patterns.

Arrive at The Interview Venue On Time: Ideally, you should arrive about 10-15 minutes before your interview. Being late for an interview sends the signal that you are unreliable and inattentive to details. Showing up too early makes you seem over-eager and stalker-like. If you arrive 30 minutes or more before your scheduled session, then the hiring manager may feel rushed to greet you or uncomfortable with the prospect of having you hang out in a reception area.

Smile: As simple as it may look, putting up a smiling face at an interview venue is a pleasant tool and part of your first impression. These facial cues are very powerful in shaping interactions, even in the presence of other information.

Be Nice to the Receptionist: Some front desk person may be so annoying but you have no choice other than being nice to anyone you meet at the front desk of any organisation you are going for an interview.

Have Everything Neat, Organized, and Accessible: At an interview be sure that you will be asked to present copy your updated CV. It will be nice to have it presented in few seconds as it will not look good for you to be struggling with some rough papers in your bag before finally bringing out your CV.

Confidence: Most employers like candidate who is confident. So, their first impression about your confidence level is drawn within seconds of your entrance into the interview room.

Be concise: One of the biggest mistakes to make during a short interview is rambling.

Think in bullet points: For every answer, try to think in bullet points. This will help you be more succinct and pace yourself with your answers.

Show passion: Enthusiasm is infectious, and all employers want their hires to really want the specific position.
