PSG striker Kylian Mbappe has today officially become the youngest player to ever be nominated for the Ballon D’Or.

The award, which will be handed out in December, marks the most prestigious individual prize in world football, and has been dominated by Barcelona and Real Madrid rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo every year since 2008.


The nominees for this year’s edition of the prize were announced by France Football this evening, with the majority of world football’s biggest names featured.


The aforementioned duo of Messi and Ronaldo both received the nod, along with the likes of Neymar, Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard and Robert Lewandowski.


Record-breaker

Another of the star names listed was PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, who’s inclusion marks a milestone in the history of the Ballon D’Or.


At just 18 years and 9 months old, Mbappe is now officially the youngest player to ever be nominated for the accolade, breaking the previous record of prolific Englishman MichaelOwen.


Mbappe broke onto the scene in incredible fashion last season at Monaco, helping Leonardo Jardim’s side to a shock Ligue 1 title, as well as a spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League.


In just his second season as a professional (he made just 2 starts in his first season), the prodigious youngster racked up 21 goals and 8 assists between the league and Champions League (23 starts).


While Mbappe will not be expected totake home the Ballon D’Or, the simplefact that he has even received a nomination at such a tender age speaks volumes as to his incredible potential.


He has since made the move to Parisian giants PSG, with his fellow teammates Neymar and Edinson Cavani both also up for this year’s award.
