The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, [NSCDC] Alhaji Abduallahi Gana Muhammadu, has assured the Minister of Mining and Steel Development, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa Bwari, of plans by the agency to set-up a task force specifically charged with protecting solid mineral sites from encroachment by illegal miners.

Muhammadu disclosed this while receiving the minister at the Corps Headquarters in Sauka, Abuja.

He explained that the key role of the NSCDC in the protection of critical infrastructure and national assets cannot be compromised, adding that the security agency was aware of the Federal Government’s concern over the rise in illegal mining operations in Nigeria.

He noted that since the signing of the Memorandum of understanding [MOU] between the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the Ministry of Interior in 2016 for the Corps to protect all mining sites against illegal miners, several arrests have been made and some illegal miners being prosecuted while mining sites in Zamfara, Osun, Plateau, Imo, FCT and Nassarawa among others have been shut down.

He disclosed that some foreigners of Chinese origin were arrested in Plateau State recently for illegal mining. Their documents and equipment were seized while they are awaiting prosecution, he added.

The Minister of Mining and Steel Development, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa Bwari commended the effort of the Corps in tackling illegal mining activities, acknowledging that the record of achievement made so far judging by the report submitted has been impressive.

He assured the Corps that the ministry has set up a committee to review the operational tactics of the various stakeholders in the protection of mining sites, promising that as soon as the report is completed the ministry will inaugurate a mining surveillance squad to work with the defenders of mining sites.

The minister regretted that economic saboteurs have devised more sophisticated means of carrying out their nefarious activities by conniving with foreigners but assured that the ministry will put modalities in place to effectively train mining site defenders to identify the different types of mining particles that may be taken away without been noticed.
