The Aare Ona Kakanfo must be fearless, courageous and above all resolute and resolved. As the generalissimo of the Yoruba army, he never surrenders, he either conquers or killed in battle. He stands tall in defeat or death.

We heard of Afonja, the 6th Kankanfo, how he fought the Fulani warriors in Ilorin in 1834, even as arrows rained on him, Afonja did not fall, he died on his feet, he was held up by the hundreds of arrows shot at him. Very gallant.

We know of the exploits of the 10th Kakanfo, the legendary Kurunmi of Ijaye. What of the 11th Kakanfo, Ojo Aburumaku, we heard because he had no war to fight, he started one by himself.

After the death of the great warrior, the 12th Kakanfo, Aare Latoosa of Ibadan in 1885, the modern era gave us the great Samuel Ladoke Akintola as the 13th Kakanfo.
On 15th January,1966, he took his machine gun against the Nigerian first coupists. That night, he single handedly wiped out an entire battalion, shedding bullets on them like Rambo, the soldiers retreated, screaming for back up. He was later overpowered and his body riddled with bullets.

Remember, that same night, when the coupist went for Ahmadu Bello in Kaduna, he was hiding behind women and children.
So next time ignorant folks are shouting that Yorubas are cowards, remind them of the highly gallant Ladoke Akintola, moulded in the Afonjaic order.

We know of Moshood Abiola, the 14th Kakanfo. Very fearless and resolute on the return of democracy, he never surrendered, he fought the evil duo of Babangida and Abacha, he died on the battle. He won. We are enjoying that democracy today.

The traditional rite of 201 incisions on the back head of the Kakanfo is believed to make them extraordinary courageous, it also weaves a tragedy ending on their destiny. Even Abiola who did not perform the rite exhibited the Kakanfo mystery. Courage is their tragic flaw.

Today, there is no longer a Yoruba army and so the office of the Kakanfo is honorary but given to a worthy son with intimidating credentials of fearlessness and defence of the Yoruba race.

My opinion always shortlisted the trio of Segun Obasanjo, Bola Tinubu and Ayo Fayose. Put politics, aside these men are fearless and resolute.

However, the Alaafin has chosen Gani Adams, a 3in1 man, powerful agitator of the Yoruba agenda and convener of the Oodua Progressive Union. He is worthy.

May God bless the 15th Kakanfo.
