It's either you are a Graduate Assistant or an Assistant Lecturer. Both require an interest in and aptitude for research and academics, and requisite qualifications. At least a strong 2:1 for GA, and a Masters for AL. You also need to meet other requirements, depending on the school you're applying to.

Go speak with the HOD, Dean or any big wig you know in the school. You can also get a hold of the VC

What did you graduate with? And what field? As others mentioned above, you may speak to your HOD or Dean to find out if there are openings and your chances.
Alternatively, apply directly to the Vice-Chancellor if you're sure you qualify and there are openings. The VC will send it to the Dean, who will in turn send it to the HOD, for their comments. Then your application follows the route back to the VC
