Just as Jesus taught and warned us to beware of false prophets who comes in sheep clothing but inwardly, they are wolves (Matthew 7:15).

Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

False prophets are tagged workers of iniquity (Matthew 7:23) who think what they do is right but in the end, on the day of judgment the Lord Jesus will deny them and ask them to depart from His presence and that He never knew them ( Matthew 7:21-23 ; Proverbs 14:12). You can know them by their fruits and by their way of life (Matthew 7:20).

Meticulous study of the word of God can help in identifying false teachers and their doctrines (2 Timothy 2:15). With the word of God, you can easily detect and discern if what is being taught is true. The Holy Bible is an epitome of infallible truth and knowing it will help in differentiating the truth from the false (John 8:32).

A true preacher called to preach, preach that which is in accordance with the word of God. A false teacher cannot teach the scripture well enough because it is the Holy Spirit — the Chief teacher of the whole universe (John 14:26) that teaches the scriptures to an individual and only those having the Holy Spirit indwell in them can teach the scripture more effectively (1 Corinthians 6:19). Put into notice what the preacher preach and how it relate with the scripture.

Jesus should be the main focus of any true preacher (John 14:6). Jesus stated categorically that we can do nothing without Him unless we abide in Him (John 15:5) and no one can preach sound doctrine without abiding in Jesus (John 15:4). A congregation where Jesus is not the center focus is not a church but a cult because Christianity is all about Christ and being Christ like.

The life of a true preacher should reflect what he preaches, since according to the scripture we can know them by their fruits and way of life. If he preaches what is good, he himself should do what is good and right always keeping diligently the commandments of God (Luke 6:43 ; Matthew 7:17).

Luke 6:43: “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.”

A prophet can be a foreteller of future events, but when he prophesies and it does not come to pass, know that such prophet and his prophesy is not from God and such prophet such be avoided (Deuteronomy 18:22).

Deuteronomy 18:22: “When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord , if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

Hypocrisy and pretense can also be seen in the life of a false prophet or teacher. Display of outward kindness and public righteousness can be a trait of a false prophet. Jesus Christ says we shouldn’t give alms for recognition or praise of men (Matthew 6:1), or public righteousness like praying and fasting to be seen and praised by men (Matthew 6:1-5). Giving alms publicly to be seen by all is against the laws of Christ and such prophet who does this may not do it genuinely from the heart but with hidden motives.

Don’t be swayed by outward public kindness because even the servants of Satan can disguise themselves as angels of light ( 2 Corinthians 11:13-14). Don’t be overwhelmed by signs and wonders (John 4:48; 1 John 4:1), because even false prophets do signs and wonders also. Jesus warned that they will display signs and wonders deceiving many including the elects (Mark 13:22; Matthew 24:24).

Matthew 24:24: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

Finally brethren, test every spirit. Every spirit from God confesses that Jesus come in human form and no man can declare that Jesus Christ is the Lord except by the power of the Holy Ghost (1 John 4:1-3; 1 Corinthians 12:3).

1 Corinthians 12:3: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”
