YAMS, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, pepper, carrots, onions, groundnuts and other food products that are brought in from Benue, Niger, Nasarawa and other Northern parts of the country may soon vanish entirely from Southern Nigeria as the Arewa Food Merchants, who have kept their trucks off the roads in the South since last Monday, refused to yield any ground at the weekend. The merchants, according to their agents in Lagos, are protesting what they say is ”the unbearable legal and illegal levies” that they are made to pay on roads in Southern Nigeria. They are also said to be protesting the brutalisation of lorry drivers, as well as the extortion by the police, social miscreants (Area Boys), and numerous revenue collectors. Alhaji Sahabi Sokoto, the vice-chairman of the Mile 12 Market Traders Association, said, ”Every food trailer driver that loads food from anywhere in the North and does not have an extra N70,000 in his pocket to settle police, area boys and the revenue people and their agents, especially in Lagos, cannot hope to get to Mile 12.” for more, follow this link: http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201003141304989 |

Now we are moving on toward a balance system, a system where each one contribution will be recognized and respected. A system where those poor farmers will be respected the same way we respect the bank managers and powerful men. It is hilarious to say - just pepper seller or common pepper seller on strike, we need them the same way we need others (working and intelligent class) for the full functioning of our system. |

if na europe na milk the farmers go block from reaching the general populace. but seriously- no pepper at all? my grandma believed someone could fall sick if they didnt have enough pepper in their diet i miss my little garden in naija where i planted pepper, tomatoes and beans back in the day boiled unripe green beans in the pod is very sweet oh but this topic na serious matter sha. there was a time when beans were terribly scarce- people were looking everywhere and couldnt find any. The one we eventually got after much inconvenience and from the far end of town, was so terribly bad that i could only stare in amazement. Never saw that type of beans in my life and have never seen the likes since. full of sticks, twigs, stones, and what have you. We spent the better part of the day trying to salvage the few manageable kernels of beans from the giant mess. We eventually had to dump about 98% of the thing. i have no idea what caused that scarcity. |

Re: No Pepper In Ibadan ( Pepper Seller On Strike ) 5 Rodo For N1000 by yemipretty(f): 7:55pm On Mar 15, 2010 |
Its not only in Ibadan, even Lagos has been affected.; Over the weekend, 3 mean looking tatase sold for N200. Its very pathetic. But on a serious note, this could be what would prompt us southern states to take farming and agric a bit seriously as opposed to the fertilizer distribution chain it is at the moment. As for the indomie eating fella, soon even indomie wont have chilli sauce in it anymore only that sickenly sweet spice. |

if u know Ibadan for long time, U will quite understand my stand here. Ibadan is the most peaceful town in the federation. Ibadan used to be a palce where cost of living is highly and very considerable. it is a land where foreigners, and people from other part of the country wnat to stay. is it not alarming to hear that pepper sellers are on strike in ibadan, where I grew up, born and bred? this must be an abberation of normalcy. Sorry, I mean to say, this is an abberation of normalcy, God will judge all the bad people in this country, |
