Singapore, among the world’s most expensive places to own a vehicle, will stop increasing the total number of cars on its roads next year.
The government will cut the annual growth rate for cars and motorcycles to zero from 0.25 percent starting in February, the transport regulator said Monday.
“In view of land constraints and competing needs, there is limited scope for further expansion of the road network,” the Land Transport Authority said in a statement on its website. Roads already account for 12 percent of the city-state’s total land area, it said.
Smaller than New York City, land in Singapore is a precious commodity and officials want to ensure the most productive use of the remaining space. Its infrastructure is among the world’s most efficient and the government is investing S$28 billion ($21 billion) more on rail and bus transportation over the next five years, the regulator said.
Singapore requires car owners to buy permits — called Certificates of Entitlement — that allow holders to own their vehicles for 10 years. These permits are limited in supply and auctioned monthly by the government. At the most recent offering last week, the permit cost S$41,617 for the smallest vehicles. No it isn't.
Rather it is an act of foresight to prevent chaos in the future a culture we should imbibe.

the country is small and with a rising population and affordable cars , if every one is allowed to buy a car then there will be chaos, it is a good plan .it will discourage some ppl from buying cars and make them use public transport instead

Dumb souls everywhere. Sane countries are every day innovating how to improve orderliness in it cities and you're talking rubbish.

When you travel abroad and land at MMIA in Lagos, the rowdiness and disorderliness is enough to make one sick.
Lagos is rated 3rd most dangerous city in the world to drive a car.

In all things thank God.

Dont compare yourself with others. Thank God for what He has given you.

Look at us in Nigeria, with less than ten thousand dollars you buy a car, register it and get on the road. We have land plenty plenty.

Nice move for them and bicycle usage will be on the increase there.

If we had effective and efficient rail system, i think most person will prefer going by rail rather than own a car or even travel by Busses. It's even more cheaper. I pray we reach that level soon.

baba forget this part.

but the issue is the use of public transport system like the rails and buses , the major aim of this policy is minimize congestion on the roads and if possible eliminate it without causing any inconvenience to commuters and transporters as well
