Why Is Yawning So Contagious by Queerlyshrewd: 9:59am On Oct 24, 2017
A yawn is a reflex consisting of the simultaneous inhalation of air and the stretching of the eardrums, followed by an exhalation of breath, it can be caused by Fatigue, Stress, sleepiness, or just plain boredom.

Okay, pause. I don’t want to go all geeky on this, You are in class one day, tired from all the gruesome lectures, you can’t wait to go home, you feel an urge to open your mouth wide, you succumb, the muscles around your mouth and jaws feel so good, you feel you can hear louder and at the last, it comes to an end, you gain back control of your mouth, you turn to your friend just to ask what time it is but hell no, his mouth is as wide as an Hippo’s would.

Contagious yawning is an echophenomenom (an automatic imitation of another person) as described in the “Journal Current Biology” published on August 31st, 2017
To study what happens in the brain when someone “catches” a yawn, the researchers observed 36 adults who were asked to watch video clips of other people yawning. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), the researchers measured the participant’s brain activity. Then they were asked to resist yawning, well, it turned out to be a Yawnfest. When same participants were told to yawn anytime they feel like it, most were able to suppress the feeling. In other words “The urge to yawn is increased by trying to stop yourself from doing so”. Meanwhile they discovered high levels of brain activity at a person’s motor cortex before the yawn and more activity was met with more inclination to yawn.

The researchers then upped their game, they applied electric currents to the area of the brain, and the urge to yawn increased. So when a person sees another yawning, the excitation of the motor cortex initiates the echophenomenom. Well, this is just part of it, researches are still ongoing to unravel the mysteries behind Yawning.

Back to my story, turns out your friend is just having little sparks in his head that makes him want to swallow you whole, finally he clenches his jaw back in place and you can finally ask the time, 3pm he tells you, finally time to go home, you pack your bags and get up to leave, another yawn hits you, this one so wide you literally hear a crack sound in your jaw, you snap out of it.
Damn, you left your pen on the desk, you turn around to take it, and there he is yawning like a hippo again but something is different this time, it is now a class full of Hippos.

How many times did you YAWN while reading this?
