luvinhubby:^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ @ luvinhubby Thanks for the info on Kanayo O. Kanayo's early acting cameo appearances in the 1980s in Enugu. You are the FIRST person that I will be revealing some very deep details and shor document extracts to about the origins of the Nigerian movie industry in order to SMASH and correct some annoying historical distortions or URBAN LEGENDS! The irritating terminology called "Nollywood" was first used in 2002 by Matt Steinglass an American Journalist who did NOT have a deep knowledge about the origins of the Nigerian movie industry. The Nigerian movie industry has been in existence for decades [the 1950s] before the first film to be packaged on home video cassetes in Nigeria [Soso Meji] was produced in the Yoruba movie industry in 1988 by Ade Ajiboye! The movie entitled "Soso Meji" was produced by Mr. Ade Jiboye and it was also screened at the cinemas in Lagos. In 1989, the late Prince Alade Aromire who died in a car crash in Lagos also produced "Ekun" on VHS home video. These early home videos and the cinema screenings in Lagos were very popular and sold out! There were several VHS home videos and cinema screenings in between 1988 and 1992 in the Yoruba genre of the Nigerian movie industry with Lagos as the entertainment capital. In 1992, Kenneth Nnebue did an Ibo film entitled Living in Bondage part1. It was the first Ibo home video packaged in VHS video cassetes and the part2 came out in 1993. Kenneth Nnebue gave CREDIT to the Indian movie industry and the Yoruba movie industry which is a subset of the Nigerian movie industry for INSPIRING him to be the pioneer producer of the first Ibo language home video. The film was supposed to have been done in Yoruba language, and he had taken his script and was in touch with some Yoruba language home video producers but he decided to take the risk by taking the script and did it in Ibo. He said all these in an interview in a 1997 edition of ThisDay Newspapers which is still in my procession/library collection. Kenneth Nnebue NEVER at any time claimed that "Living in Bondage" was the beginning of the Nigerian movie industry. It is people who didn't know how he started his career by understudying the Yoruba language movie producers of the cinema and home videos from 1988 in Lagos that mangled up the history. It is a SHAME that history is not being taken seriously by people in Nigeria, that is why this FALSEHOOD has been circulated by bloggers and on Social Media by those who were NOT born in the 1960s/1970s/1980s when Nigerian-produced movies where shown in Cinemas on celluloid packaging and from 1988 on VHS home video packaging in the Yoruba movie industry. In fact his Ibo film was NOT even the FIRST in Nigeria. The first was entitled "Amadi" in 1975 and it was screened in Lagos. It was subtitled in English. I also have a copy of a 1975 magazine that showed the first military governor of Lagos State, Brigadier General Mobolaji Johnson and Attorney General of Lagos State Justice Adefarasin in attendance at the premier of "Amadi" at a Cultural Centre in Lagos State. Justice Adefarasin's son is the Pastor Mike Adefarasin of "House on the Rock" in Lekki Peninsula The American and Indian movie industry are based on mainly cinemas and NOT homevideos. The Indians rejected the term Bollywood because they see it as an insult from the Western media. Bollywood is a term created by the Western media as a caricature of Hollywood. It is like saying: Nigerian movie is a Hollywood wannabe or copycat! This is why the Indians feel insulted when Bollywood [Hollywood in Bombay] is used to describe their movie industry which dates back to the 1920s. The so-called "Nollywood" means[Hollywood in Nigeria] was formed or first used as I said before by an American journalist named Matt Steinglass in the New York Times in the year 2002! The adoption of that term amounts to colonial mentality by some Nigerians and the Nigerian media since Indians and the Indian cinema movies industry which is based on ONLY the Hindi language, have long REJECTED the silly terminology of "Bollywood." All the best! |

Pussitto:^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ @Pussitto The vexatious terminology called "Nollywood" was FIRST coined by an American Journalist called Matt Steinglass in the New York Times in 2002! The Nigerian movie industry has been in existence since the 1950s. For example, Professor Wole Soyinka's movie "Kongi's Harvest" was produced and directed in Nigeria by Nigerians and shown in the cinemas as a celluloid film in 1969 and it received critical acclaim. This is the reason why Prof Soyinka is given the nickname: Kongo! Please read the post above you that I made to @luvinhubby for a FULLER and interesting response to this topic. All the best! |
