In this age of automation, shouldnt it be a prime goal of software companies to cut the cost of producing software drastically? We have smart multi million dollar ides andtools but y nothing to save one of the biggest costs of all? The cost of learning a language and geting good at it?
y dont we have software that can translate efficiently between all popular/mainstream languages?
Thenthe programmer wont have to learn language x,he'll just give the translator code in his familiar language and it will spit out the equivalent in the target language! That's automation.

Well, that's not easy to get by. *code translation software*
It's not about cost per se, the idea just has not been cracked yet(at least in the opensource world).

But there are some useful examples like cython, though you have to specify some parameters for it to compile python to C code and JIT(just in time) compilers like PyPy but this still does not support python libraries written partly with other languages yet and i read it's not well funded at the moment which buttresses your argument.

So they are efforts, but we're not they yet.

That's like a higher level language. If such exist I am guessing it will be called Unified Programming Language (UPL).
If we consider the fact all high level languages like Java, C, C#, & C++ translate to same machine code before being executed then what OP is suggesting is already existing, but at a lower level.
For such idea to stand it will have to be an industry standard accepted by all major languages.
