Eye Drops Aren't A Panacea

To most people, all eye diseases, especially those that present with redness of the eye, are the same. To most people, all eye drops are, more or less, the same, and perform similar functions. So, once you have an eye pain, or redness, all you need do is grab an eye drop, and bingo: you got your cure.

What this people don't know is that the eye, like any other part of the body, is made up of a myriad of structures, each of which can be contracted by one pathology, or the other. That medically speaking, the eye is a world of its own, hence there's an area of Medicine called "Ophthalmology" with doctors SPECIALLY trained for treatment of eye pathologies. That there are almost as much eye drops, with different functions, as there are oral medications. And that not all eye diseases are amenable to eye drops; some needs, not just other forms of medications, and or interventions, but also SURGERY!

The eye is one of those places where even angels- the initiated, fear to walk, or walk with utmost caution. By the 11th day, when she came, it turned out that what she had was Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma, and she had already lost most of her peripheral vision, and was practically blind in that eye. So much for eye drops!

He's a 3 year old preschool boy, who developed a white spot in the centre of the black of his eyes, at the age of 2 months. From then, mother got an eye drop and started applying it on the affected eye. When that wasn't working, she resorted to concoctions.

As the child got to age 1, they realized that he wasn't actually seeing with that eye. They still continued with the concoction remedy.

1 week before presentation, the child's eyes turned red. 3 days after, it started swelling up. By the time they came, the eye was completely destroyed, and nothing was left of it. Turned out what the child had all this while was RETINOBLASTOMA, a childhood cancer of the eye, and it had already started infiltrating surrounding tissues, spreading.
Wasted 3 years. So much for eye drops.

In our villages, there are elderly diabetics with cataract, that a simple cataract excision would restore sight to. But no, instead of going to see an Ophthalmologist, we would rather give them corneal scarring on top of it with steroid-containing eye drops.
