APC NEC Meeting: Oyegun May Be Asked To Step Aside by nairavsdollars(f): 9:06am On Oct 30, 2017
There are indications that John Odigie-Oyegun, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), may be asked to step aside as the party holds its national caucus and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting tomorrow.

A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke with INDEPENDENT on Sunday, said though a lot of issues may crop up at the meetings, of paramount importance is the issue of the performance of Odigie-Oyegun so far since the party took over governance on May 29, 2015.

He added that out of the 24 governors that make up the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), 17 are against the continued stay of Odigie-Oyegun as the party’s national chairman, leaving him with only seven governors who still want him to remain in office.

It is obvious that majority of party members, especially the governors, have lost confidence in Odigie-Oyegun. Their intention is to remove him but from what we have seen, that day may not be appropriate. It is likely they will ask him to step aside. That likelihood is very high”, he said.

He also said the meetings will also discuss the report of the different fact-finding and reconciliation committees in states where crises exist especially in Kogi, Rivers and Bayelsa.

Other important issues which may likely take centre stage at the caucus meeting is the report of Muiz Banire Constitution Review Committee, which is expected to be presented by the John Odigie-Oyegun-led NWC.

“The constitution of the party’s board of trustees (BoT) may also be presented for discussion at the national caucus meeting”, he said.

It would be recalled that Charles Idahosa, a chieftain of the APC in Edo State, in an interview with INDEPENDENT had said the party is in tatters under the chairmanship of Odigie-Oyegun.

Accusing the party chairman of sycophancy, he also threw his weight behind a statement made by Itse Sagay (SAN) that the leadership of the party is weak and conniving with corrupt politicians.

“How do you explain a situation where APC as the ruling party has majority in the National Assembly yet it could not influence who became Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives?

“The people the party wanted lost out in both chambers and a member of the opposition (Ike Ekweremadu) is Deputy Senate President today. From this, you can see that the leadership of the APC has failed us woefully. We have not been able to put our house in order. But I don’t think the president has chosen to remain silent on the report. Very soon, I am sure action will be taken on.
