Ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont fled to Brussels on Monday as his separatist movement collapsed and Spain's top prosecutor called for him to be charged with rebellion, sedition and embezzlement.

Mr Puigdemont had vowed to defy Madrid by turning up to work despite threats of arrest and even tweeted a picture of the presidential palace roof, but never appeared.

Belgian authorities had suggested that the ousted president could be granted asylum if he faced the threat of arrest in his home country, but his status is not yet clear.

Former speaker Carme Forcadell was also ordered to hand herself over to police. She was pictured arriving at the parliamentary palace in Barcelona on Monday where she announced the government was dissolving.

The extraordinary turn of events has shocked many in Catalonia, with unionists jubilant while many separatists reacted with a sense of anger and humiliation.

From Ojukwu to Kanu and now Puigdemont, they always run away once the shiit they started gets real. Those who celebrated the so called catalonia independence better come out now and smell the coffee, the leader of the breakaway republic has gone the way of Ojukwu. Now, the ordinary folks he misled will have to clear the shiit he started.

All other would be breakaway republic should better learn from this, you either get ready militarily to battle your way to independence through violence or forget about it. Independence through referendum or non violence means is only a pipe dream.
