The Nigerian corporate world was jolted but not shocked with the announcement of a new Chairman for the Board of Unity Bank on Thursday. He is Aminu Babangida, son of former military ruler President Ibrahim Babangida.

The older and scion of the family, Mohammed had served on the board for over sixteen years having started with Intercity Bank, one of the banks that merged to form Unity Bank.

Reticent to a fault, Aminu was formerly into big time diesel supplies in Abuja before he veered into properties.

In the last couple of years, he has been doing properties in Europe and has gradually drifted away from the Nigerian energy sector. The new appointment is on a part time basis and so it would only marginally affect his schedule as he has been shuttling between Nigeria and Europe before now

In appointing Aminu as its new chairman. The bank must have seen a lot of glowing attributes. The ex-military president, Ibrahim Babangida's son looked every inch intimidating on paper thus beating all other likely candidates for the job.

Another important factor that must have influenced the appointment  is the fact that the family owns majority shares in the bank.

Aminu exudes the common core of entrepreneurial depth, tact, and other personal and social abilities which has proven to be the key ingredients of his brilliance and emotional intelligence.

Beside his experience as a business manager and self-made entrepreneur, Aminu has also worked on the trading floor of Trafigura BV, London, UK. He attended Regents Business School and Westminster Business School in London where he obtained a BA in International Business and MA in International Business Management respectively.

Everywhere Aminu navigates, he radiates a spirit of independence and sense of worth that even the world's finest and most daring industrialists labour to achieve. And he is just a bit over 40.

His vast knowledge, unrelenting gift of perception and excellent moral fiber, enhanced his appointment by Unity Bank as well as the ratification of his employment by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Boardroom politics and is not the stuff for kids. But the banks are calmer now and with the family being the major owners of the bank, it would definitely pave way for a less-restive tenure.

One aspect of Aminu Babangida's lifestyle that has continued to surprise many. He is indeed the most eligible bachelor in town. This is more so when you take into congnisance the affluence and aplomb that greeted his sister's wedding earlier this year. Sources however claimed that despite his foreign trips and spending more time out of Nigeria, he is not too particular about settling down with a foreigner.
Rather he would prefer to bid his time and ensure that he is doubly sure about the woman he takes to the altar.
