Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, says that reduced travel time through the use of digital map saves Nigerians nearly N200 billion a year.
Mohammed said this at the inauguration of the Economic Value of Geospatial Services by Google on Friday in Abuja.
The minister said that digital maps, popularly called Google map for location of street addresses, had also reduced travel time in the country by average of eight per cent. The ability to simply search for a location and get real time directions, using geospatial technology, had made lives much more convenient for people to move around.
This reduced travel time alone saves our people nearly N200 billion a year.

It's probably a figure computed by Google which our dear Minister accepts without any question because it shows govt is working hard to save their money.

Guys, there is no doubt that the value proposition of applying geospatial technologies to different aspect of modern life is huge, however hiw does one quantify that value?

I think the govt by this statement is trying very hard to advertise Google's geospatial services by killing local industry.

I consider it a big shame that a Minister of a country could stoop so low to such an extent of promoting a private company's services when OSGOF and other govt agencies are languishing in abysmal quagmire of non-existent.
