nairavsdollars:
The UK had always supported coup in Africa...

Not only that but more of the fact that IBB did their bidding!
Before IBB came to power, naira was gaining lots of grounds and becoming a contender in the world currency. The likes of UK and other western countries were not so happy about it. Naira was seen as a treat then came IBB who messed up the system, killed the naira and introduced SAP which crippled our economy to the joy of the likes of UK and the rest.
To honour IBB and give him the pat of the back,he got that honour.
The western world and countries don't believe in the raise of any African country rather they see us as a set of people that must be subjugated by all means necessary. They want to rule indirectly by dictating to us what we must do.

Often times, I wonder the kind of interest British and their Monarchs have on Nigeria?
Despite being our colonial Master, I feel they've not helped Nigeria as they should undecided
(my opinion though)

BTW, why should they give a coup plotter this type of rousing welcome?
Seems they are not happy seeing us prospering?

DutchBruh:

The British practice functional corrupt, goverment officials still steal and collect kickbacks. However, they make sure it is not at the expense of their nation, they provide electricty, education.railway and have the best road networks.

Abi? I wonder how they failed to let our leaders know that undecided

Have you noticed French colonized countries do not lack in proper provision of social amenities and infrastructure provided they have the resources.

This reminds me of my very favorite pupil's book 1 social studies reader "The British Came As Traders But Later Became Rulers". These people and their cunning antics though.

They were received by the Lord Mayor of London (that was at Stanstead, rather than Heathrow).

This was around the time that they were working out the deal for the Vickers Main Battle Tanks.

Vickers had made the tanks for the British Army, but the British Army chose to go with the Challenger II project, so Vickers and the UK Government needed new buyers.

Nigeria bought quite a few of those tanks in the late '80s and early '90s. That was part of the reason for Thatcher's visit to Lagos in 1988 and Babangida's visit to the UK in 1989.

Nigeria's military problem is very simple amend the Constitution declaring all past and future military governments illegal including their decrees and see sanity return to Nigeria.

That has been proposed many times. I think someone suggested it at the National Assembly during the 2nd Republic. It won't work.

Decree 1 of any military administration usually suspends portions of the constitution and the military usually promulgate a new constitution when they are leaving office.

Furthermore, the law abhors a vacuum and if you make all military governments illegal, then you make all their actions illegal. Think of the chaos that would ensue. That would mean (for example) that the Federal Road Safety Corp is an illegal organisation and everybody that has drawn a salary from it have engaged in an illegality. It would also mean that the 1999 constitution (which was promulgated as a decree and signed by General Abubakar) is illegal.

Think of all the institutions that were set up by military decrees.

It's not just about amnesties. What you are suggesting would mean that every single decree that the military made (including decrees about armed robbery, rape, creation of institutions like JAMB, etc) would have to be remade. It would mean that armed robbers, rapists, etc who are in jail because they contravened military decrees would have to be released (because those decrees were illegal).

Besides, such a provision would contravene an important principle of the rule of law which states that you can't make retroactive laws.

And it would not work. Every single coup that has been staged in Nigeria has been illegal (even the succesful ones). Why have none of the coup plotters been arrested and jailed?

Presidents are elected

Not necesarily. A president is the head of a republic. The president could be elected, appointed or could seize power in a coup.

Were presidents Marcos, Idi Amin and Azikiwe elected?

Referring to coupists as Presidents is merely charismatic.

Azikiwe on the other hand was appointed by an elected power.

The correct term is head of state.

All those Governments can Still be declared illegal by a Court in future.

None of the coup plotters have ever been arrested because there is no evidence to that effect. Even Buhari has never agreed that he participated in a coup.

Yes they were selected to lead the country after the coup but that does not make them coup plotters.

Only the select few who make the radio annocements are culpable.

A head of state is the first citizen of a country. He could be a king, prince, president, sheikh, etc.

A president is the head of a republic, just like a king is the head of a kingdom and a prince is the head of a principality.

There is no law that states that a president must be elected.

There have been many military presidents around the world. For example https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idi_Amin

Nigeria had had only one military president and that's Ibrahim Babangida.

The 1999 Constitution is in my opinion illegal. Infact there is still a case in court asking the court to declare it illegal.

Like ibsaid, the title president is merely titular and is even used in corporations.

However in political literature, the term president is reserved for the head of State of a PRESIDENTIAL system or Semi Presidential System
