Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has lamented President Muhammadu Buhari‘s silence over the deaths of 26 Nigerian women allegedly sexually abused and murdered in the Mediterranean Sea. A Spanish warship Cantabria had docked in the southern part of Salemo carrying 375 migrants, along with the dead girls. It was reported that the girls, mostly aged 14-18, may have been sexually abused and murdered as they attempted to cross the Mediterranean. http://dailypost.ng/2017/11/06/26-nigerians-allegedly-sexually-abused-murdered-mediterranean-sea/ However, Ezekwesili, in her reaction on Twitter, wrote: “Muhammadu Buhari, shocking that you personally have not acknowledged that 26 of the Citizens that you are their President drowned in the Mediterranean Sea and the whole world is talking about it. This is NOT LEADERSHIP, Sir. #EveryCitizensLifeMatters. “Muhammadu Buhari, It is CALLOUS for any Leadership to NEVER feel the pains that tragedies bring the way of a people. Can your FG and Aso Rock signal to the Nigerian Public that #NigerianCitizensLivesMatter? Can YOU? “I recall our public outrage when during the previous administration, then President, rather than acknowledge deaths in a bomb blast tragedy was busy at a Campaign Ground. She should shut up and sit down. She wants to pretend to care about women although she was happy to serve with the devil OBJ. Where was she when the wives of those illegally locked up because they asked for referendum went to Abuja to protest? Nonsense |

To be sincere, the journey to Europe through the Mediterranean sea is a matter of life and death and people that undertake the journey are well aware of the risk. I don't see the point in government expressing fake condolences over their deaths despite several warnings that people should desist from embarking on such a dangerous journey. |

The women knew the ramifications of their journeys before they left. They knew it was a death mission. Only few Nigerians would claim to be oblivious of boats capsizing, people dying in the deserts and the tortuous life in Libyan prisons. And if the Presidency gives issues condolences and probably compensations, will it not be encouraging such actions? |
