Abuja Taxi Drivers Protest Over Alleged Harassment By Task Force by Realcash224(m): 8:59pm On Nov 08, 2017
SOME taxi drivers, on Wednesday, blocked major roads within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja to protest constant harassment by the task force officials.
The protesters, according to the Tribune Online findings, set up bonfires on the roads which resulted to heavy vehicular traffic on Wuse-Berger axis.
It was gathered that the bone of contention was not unconnected with the constant extortion and harassment by the task force officials.
Investigation further revealed that the protest, which commenced early in the morning at the popular Wuse market, quickly spread to the other parts of the city causing serious artificial hindrances within the metropolis.
Conflicting report, however, said that one of the taxi drivers was shot by a soldier attached to the task force.
According to an eyewitness, “the protesters said a taxi driver was killed by a task force in the market, so that is why they are protesting. Before he was shot, they were already protesting constant extortion by task force.
“They said that is how task force normally terrorise them, but the problem is that they were blocking the roads and harassing motorists driving around those areas,” an eye witnesses said.
It was learnt further that some drivers made u-turns to avoid being caught up in the crisis.
A taxi driver , Abubakar Sani, said the victim was shot by a soldier attached to the task force but he was quickly rushed to the hospital where he was responding to the treatment.
The anti-riot police officers have been deployed to the market and other strategic to forestall further break down of law, while market remained shut.
