Some Nigerians are blasting President Muhammadu Buhari for condemning the military coup in Zimbabwe, saying that he should remember his own bloody past.

Commentators on the social media asked him to remember when he overthrew the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari on 31 December 1983 before he was overthrown himself less than two years after by General Babangida

“The day you ‘overthrew’ Shagari, you did not respect the Nigerian constitution,” lamented Mustapher Salis Sani in response to a story published by Simon Ateba News Africa.

President Buhari on Wednesday called for calm, peace and respect for the constitution in Zimbabwe and urged all political and military stakeholders in Zimbabwe to avoid any action that may plunge the country into unnecessary conflict and impact negatively on the region.

According to President Buhari, “every attempt must be made to resolve all contentious issues by constitutional means in Zimbabwe to save the country from avoidable political instability.”

The President appeal came in the wake of reported “military takeover” as a result of rising political tension in the southern African country sequel to President Robert Mugabe’s recent removal of former Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

This led to the threat by the head of the Armed Forces of Zimbabwe, General Constantino Chiwenga, that “the military will not hesitate to step in” when the issue had to do with protecting the “revolution.”

Please note that it was IBB and others
that plotted that 1983 coup that overthrew
Shehu Shagari - NOT General
Mohd. Buhari who was the GOC in Jos
at that time. He was only drafted in to
become the Head-of-State by the Army Armoured Officer Ibrahim Babangida and other officers
and it was the same IBB that removed
Gen.Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon who was in
Saudi Arabia on hajj with Kunle his
son.

PMB said in an interview in 2014 that he knew that IBB
was planning to remove him, and he could
have resisted but he did NOT want bloodshed
to occur. That is why he told IBB "Ibro...do
whatever you want to do..."

So the criticism of PMB for allegedly
condemning the Zimbabwean military takeover is
misplaced and people should learn
to read history books especially those
who were not alive when an event took
