The Enugu State Executive Council has awarded multiple contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of 14 critical roads in both the Enugu metropolis and some rural communities at the cost of N1,532,148,154.76.

The state government had early this month awarded similar contracts for the rehabilitation of five major roads located mainly in Abakpa Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area at the cost of about N1billion.

Briefing journalists on the outcome of the Council’s meeting held at Government House, Enugu, the state’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, who was accompanied by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Festus Uzor said that the approvals for the contracts were given after an extensive deliberation on various issues affecting the state, in line with the rural development agenda of the state government as well as its urban renewal programme.

Engr. Nnaji explained that the road projects awarded were spread across the state and strategically located to impact on access mobility and decongest some urban roads such as the Nike Lake road, through construction of bypass.

In actualizing this, he disclosed that “the Council approved the linking of Ezike road-Mgbowo-Nike Lake road extension in Enugu East Local Government Area, adding that “this is a popular road and once this road is linked, people coming into Enugu from other states could drive through there to access the airport or continue their journey to destinations such as Anambra State.”

The Works Commissioner stated that some of the rural roads, such as the Ogrute-Umuogbo Ulo-Isiugwu-Umuokpu-Ette road, in Igbo-Eze North LGA, that lead to neighbouring Benue State had “for years not seen any form of construction whatsoever”.

A breakdown of the approvals further shows contract awards for the construction and rehabilitation of the following roads: Construction of Ohom-Orba-Amajioka-Umuikeoha-A gu Orba and Okpu-Agu Orba road in Udenu Local Government Area; and the rehabilitation of Njamanze Entrance/Ogui Road; rehabilitation of Bonny Lane/Ogui Road; rehabilitation of Asata Chemist Lane/Ogui Road.

Others include, the reconstruction of New Market Roundabout-Civil Defence Headquarters-Works Road, in Enugu North Local Government Area and reconstruction/rehabilitation of Ngenevu road and Brodrick Street, Coal Camp, in Enugu North council area, etc.

It would recalled that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi during his campaign for the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the just concluded Local Government Elections in Enugu State, visited the suburbs of Ngenevu and Coal Camp Enugu, and promised the residents of the areas that his administration will take immediate action to rehabilitate their roads immediately after the elections to give them a sense of belonging.

Equally approved was the procurement of an Incidence Response Vehicle for the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and an approval for the establishment of the Enugu State Multi-Door Court House for connected purposes in the state ministry of justice.

There was also an approval for the fumigation of 425 primary, secondary, science and technical schools in Enugu State prone to to dangerous reptiles and insects.

The approval, according to Dr. Uzor, who also briefed journalists, is to ensure that teaching and learning take place in a safe environment.

Ugwuanyi God bless. One thing I love about this man is his refusal to make noise in the media.

This is a man that vowed never to spend a dime of Enugu state money for media campaign.

The people of Enugu state are aware of ur good works. We don't want anybody to waste our money on media advert. Again next time don't weep like a woman. I know u weeped for political gambling but dat was awkward.
