We shared some of the most common job interview questions and best answers. and showed you why you probably failed your last interview and how to boss the next one. So, let’s get to know a bit more about job interviews and how best to adequately prepare for them.

Interview Definition

A job interview is a formal meeting in which someone asks you questions to see if you are suitable for a job. When shortlisted for a job, you are invited for an interview where the interviewer (hiring executive) will you several questions in order to ascertain your suitability for a role.

Types of Interview

There are many types of interviews that may be adopted for different jobs. It is possible pass through a combination of these interview types before the final selection. So, always endeavour to prepare well for any job interview in order to be have a higher chance of success.

One-on-One Interviews.

This interview method is the most common, and requires a one-on-one sit-down with the interviewer in an arranged office or venue. Generally, the interviewer will consider a host of factors like physical appearance, dressing, communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), confidence, etc. You may not be meeting with the final decision maker, but leave a mark by selling yourself convincingly to the interviewer.

Screening

This method of interview is used when a large pool of applicants is involved and need to be pruned down. Screening interviews are normally short because only basic questions are asked, and may be conducted over the phone.

Panel Interviews

This is a type of interview whereby an interview committee or multiple people are involved in the interview. The candidate will face a panel of interviewers at the same time. Connecting and engaging very well with each member of the panel is crucial for success. When answering questions in a panel interview, direct your answer to the person who asked the question while maintaining some eye contact with other members of the panel.

Phone Interviews

For one reason or the other (distance, time or some other obstacles), an employer may decided to conduct interview over the phone. You need to be in a conducive environment devoid of noise or any disturbance before obliging such interviews. If you are busy or not in a comfortable place, politely tell them so they can call again.

Group Interviews

In a group interview, the interviewer will interview all candidates in groups or at the same time. Because they are not so effective, they are rarely used. Remember to always introduce yourself to the group in a polite manner. Attempt to respond first to a few questions; however, don’t dominate the whole interview. Let other candidates too have a chance to give their own responses and thoughts.
