The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Solomon Olusegun, said that the suspects were responsible for the robbery attacks in Osogbo, Ikirun, Inisa and other neighbouring towns in the state. According to the police boss, the arrest of a member of the gang, 18 –year- old Olalekan Wese (not real name) assisted his team of detectives in apprehending other members of the gang.

Recovered from them were four different cut-to-size short guns, one long dane gun, one long sword, 16 cartridges, numerous sim cards, two toy guns, assorted charms and one unregistered Jincheng motorcycle.

Wese, Daily Sun gathered, was said to have assisted police detectives in calling his gang members one after the other for a supposed robbery operation. They were said to have come out from their different locations and hideouts in a bid to meet Wese at an agreed location but only to walk into the waiting hands of police detectives.

Spokesman of the gang, told Daily Sun that the gang was headed by a chieftain of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), who also doubles as a night guard in Ikirun. But now at large.

He said the gang operated last in December at Koka area of Ikirun but met its waterloo as the deputy to the gang leader and commander of the gang, identified simply as Muideen was killed by police bullets.

His words: “We operated last in December but the operation was not a successful one. Our squad has been in disarray since the death of Muideen. He was the second-in-command.

“It is our leader that always gives us information on where to go. He is an Oodua member and a night guard. He would tell us where to go and where not to go. He would tell us where he was guarding and where he was not employed to guard. He provided us with guns and armed us spiritually. The police are yet to get him. He is at large now.

“None of us here was arrested in action. It is one of our members arrested with a stolen motorcycle that sings and gives us out to the police. I have never been to jail before but I started operation since 2009. I am a commercial driver in Lagos . My driver’s license is there. I ply Ikorodu Road.

“Anytime there is operation, they will invite me and I will come down to join them. The last operation, they gave me only N7, 000. But since the death of Muideen, my mind has not settled. He used to appear to me in my dreams.

“My parents are based in Osogbo but I don’t them anytime I am around for operation. See. I came from Lagos with a bag where I kept the two guns we were using. I initially kept the bag in the bush near the house but on that night, there was heavy downpour which prompted me to bring the bag into the house. We were woken up the second day by policemen who came to arrest us.

The 50-year-old man whose son, was arrested in his house in Ikirun told Daily Sun that he had never stolen in his life but was aware that his son used to steal about five years ago before his marriage broke up and the mother took his son to Osogbo. “Since then, I didn’t hear anything about him again. Although, I was aware he went to jail in Ilesa Prison but it was not connected with armed robbery. He came to my house in Ikirun where police arrested us together.

His son, confessed to be an armed robber, saying he was the one who struck a pastor with a plank at Ago Wande area of Osogbo during a recent robbery operation in the area. He said he did that to escape being caught:

“But I did not strike the man in the head. I only struck him on the wrist to enable me escape. Incidentally, God paid me back the following day as I had an accident on a motorcycle.

The only woman in the gang, denied being a member of the gang, saying two of the gang’s members, came to consult her on the success or otherwise of their planned trip to Lagos: “I consulted my divination for them and I told them what I saw. I didn’t see any road mishap on the way and I told them this. I am not a thief. I inherited my father’s traditional supernatural power and that is what I am into”.

But when asked why she did not see the nature of those that came to consult her, she said she knew one of the accused through his late mother, who happened to be her bosom friend but not as an armed robber.

Another member of the gang who claimed to be a commercial cyclist, popularly called Okada, disclosed that he was introduced to the gang when he took one of them to a joint in Ikirun. He said that since that trip, he has been serving as the conveyor of the gang members as they chartered him to the venue of their operation.

“I never operated with them but I used to take them to wherever they wanted to operate. But I decided to set them up because they later robbed me of my Okada (motorcycle). My first Okada was bought for me by my father before I bought my own. It was the one I bought with my own money that was snatched from me by the gang. They set me up.

“I knew them through one Taye Candle, who was from Ijebu Ode. I knew him in Ikirun. One day, he asked me to take him to a joint at Oke Afo in Ikirun. It was there I met all of them. He introduced me to them and since that day, they used to send Taye Candle to me anytime they have operation. They would pay me. My first assignment with them, I was paid N300”, Waliu stated.

Another member of the gang, Oladapo Dada, however brought a dramatic twist to the matter as he burst into tears, crying that his father, an officer with the Nigerian Airforce, must not know about his involvement with gang.

Dada told Daily Sun that his father bought him an eight-passenger bus, popularly called ‘Koropo’, all in a bid to make him self-sustenance but decided to be romancing with the gang. Police said Dada has been using his mini bus for the movement of the gang.

Apparently excited with the success of the operation, CP Olusegun told residents of Ikirun, Osogbo, Inisa, Iree and other adjoining towns in the state to start sleeping with their two eyes closed.
