Mysterious fire yesterday razed the Abuja house of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Andrew Azazi (rtd). The house is located at No. 30, Mamman Nasir Street, off TY Danjuma Street, Asokoro.

Although the cause of the fire incident which started about 2.30pm is still being investigated by top security operatives, a close associate of the retired general told LEADERSHIP that "we are suspecting sabotage from the aggrieved cabal within the system in Abuja".

Gen. Azazi, who is a very close confidant of Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, was said to be out of Abuja when the incident happened.

"Normally, there are four soldiers guarding the house; but when the fire incident started, the four soldiers were no where to be found. It was the neighbours that raised alarm and later invited men of the Federal Fire Services in the villa," a close associate of Azazi told LEADERSHIP.

The retired Chief of Defence staff was said to have confronted a top military officer recently over alleged monitoring of his movement by men of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI).

"Azazi recently confronted a senior military officer over the activities of some DMI officials that were monitoring his movement. He told the army chief that there was nothing to worry about his activities; and that he was only interested in protection of our democracy,' the source added.

The army chief was said to have reported the matter to Acting President Goodluck Jonathan. But Azazi was said to have insisted in the presence of the Acting President and the army chief that he had strong evidence to support his claim.

The Bayelsa State born general is being speculated to assume the office of the Chief of Staff to the Acting President any moment from now.
