Depression is more common among women than men because of some factors that are unique to women like biological, hormonal and social factors. Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. Depression is a serious and pervasive mood disorder. As women, we have many life roles like a wife, mother etc. and all these roles can cause ups and downs throughout life. DIFFERENT FORMS OF DEPRESSION MOST COMMON IN WOMEN Persistent Depressive Disorder: These forms of depression last for two years or more. It is considered a milder form of depression. Postpartum Depression: It is often referred to as the “baby blues.” these forms of depression occur in two form, it can begin in the months following birth, or it can occur while still pregnant. Postpartum depression is a special form of depression that occurs after the birth of a baby. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: This form of depression always brought about severe anxiety, mood swings, and negative thoughts present themselves in the week before the start of menstruation. The premenstrual dysphoric disorder is tied to a woman's menstrual cycle. Major depression: Major depression affects a woman’s ability to work, eat, and sleep, in normal and effective manners and usually negatively impacts interpersonal and social relationships. It is a severe form of depression where a woman loses her ability to find pleasure in some activities. Symptoms of depression in woman The following are the symptoms of depression in a woman and they include: Sleeping too much or too little, early-morning waking Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering Loss of interest or pleasure in activities, including sex Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness, pessimism Disinterest in daily activities and relationships Feelings of exhaustion, severe tiredness Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood Mood swings and feelings of tearfulness Suicidal thoughts or attempts of suicide Feelings of emptiness, hopelessness, despair, and sadness CAUSES OF DEPRESSION IN WOMEN Hormonal causes Issues with fertility, menopause, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menstrual cycle increase woman's risk factors for developing depression. It is due to hormonal imbalances and rapid fluctuations in reproductive hormones. Social Causes What causes depression in a woman? You are more likely to develop depression from marital or relationship problems, balance issues, work-life, stressful life events, and financial troubles, including the loss of a loved one. Job loss, divorce is also included. Biological Causes Biologically, depression runs in families- some genetic makeup is more prone to depression. Some factor like physical or sexual abuse during childhood, the death of a parent before age ten can cause biological depression. Psychological Causes Women are more prone to stress because their increased levels of progesterone have been shown to prevent stress hormones from leveling out. Psychological factors that tend to affect women over men are negative body images and stress-induced depression. Women are more prone to psychological causes of depression than men. TREATMENT TO CONSIDER The most common treatment options for women suffering from depression include medications and therapy. If you are depressed, your doctor may prescribe you antidepressants to help you cope and to lessen the symptoms of your depression.
