Popular Nollywood actress, Shirley Igwe, speaks to JOY MARCUS about fond memories of her trip to Dubai

Where did you travel to recently?

I travelled to Dubai. For me, Dubai feels like Africa, because it’s a very lovely country. I usually go there to purchase make-up. Although I have visited the Sahara Desert on several occasions, I always want to go there each time I travel to Dubai, because it’s an amazing experience.

How long did you stay during your last visit to Dubai?

I stayed in a hotel for about two weeks.

What was the highlight of that particular trip?

I played with the dolphins; I always want to do that each time I visit Dubai. I went on a boat trip and I also went sightseeing. I had dinner with people from different countries in the Sahara Desert. It was really fun.

What would a first-time visitor find interesting about Dubai?

My first time in Dubai was in 2010. It was a memorable experience, I had lots of beautiful moments but the one I can remember now is visiting the Sahara Desert. So, I think any first-time visitor would find that intriguing. Dubai is an organised society. It is a tourist destination and its people are very accommodating. In spite of the fact that it’s a Muslim country, they are accommodating of other religions and people are free to do what they want. I am not saying other Muslims in Nigeria don’t accommodate other religions, they do but when you come to a country like Dubai that is an Arab country, they are welcoming because they know that the growth of their economy depends on tourists. The only snag is that their clubs close by 3am, unlike in Nigeria where you can remain in the club till 7am. Dubai is developed, its people are so civilised that you’d wish that you were a permanent resident.

The city’s view is striking; it is beautiful and you get to see several amazing things.

Did you try their local cuisine?

I ate some local food there and I discovered that they love spices.

What part of their culture did you find most interesting?

They like to show off their culture and I experienced it when I went to the Sahara Desert. There, I saw a lot of dancers display their culture and it was an interesting sight.

If you could import any technology from Dubai to Nigeria, what would that be?

A lot! Apart from technology, I like the fact that they sell a lot of good and affordable make-up in Dubai. They are also known for selling gold jewellery.

Do they have very good relationship with Nigerians?

Yes, they do. They have been dealing with Nigerians for a very long time. Both rich and poor Nigerians visit Dubai.

What did you see in Dubai that you would love to replicate in Nigeria?

Organisation, innovation and development. The Federal Government has a lot to learn from Dubai and even as individuals, we also have a lot to learn in the area of self-development. That way, we can all grow and develop our economy,

What is your favourite travel advice?

Travel light. Trust me even when you don’t travel with money, you end up buying things.
