New Ogun State Polytechnic: Amosun turns sleepy Ipokia to education city

By Wole Elegbede

On 15th September, 2017, the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun did the incredible. He laid the foundation stone of the new Ogun State Polytechnic in the sleepy town of Ipokia in Yewa South Local Government area of the state. The people of the Ipokia, including the traditional rulers and elites of the entire Yewa/Awori district, were held spell bound by the awesome development.

Amosun had pronounced at the event that the gesture was in fulfilment of his electoral promise in the governorship campaign that led to his re-election in 2015.

As usual, social media miscreants playing the cards of the opposition were engrossed in morbid display of hate, red herring, pretty jealousy and outright lies.

First, they queried why should Amosun embark on another capital intensive project when many such projects, especially road projects are yet to be completed by him. Secondly, they said it an attempt to hoodwink the Yewa/Awori people to vote for Amosun's preferred candidate in the next election in 2019. Thirdly, that the new polytechnic will never materialise.

However, less than three months after the ground breaking event, the level of development at the site of the polytechnic has not only debunk the lies, it has proved that the governor is reliable with outstanding performance.

Amosun's lofty programme in the area of education is not a one-off thing. The administration has pursued with vigour one of its cardinal objectives with regard to education namely "Affordable Quantitative Education". This superlative achievement in education has been arrested to in some quarters of no mean standing in our nation. While speaking on the approval of the upgrade of MAPOLY to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH) recently, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Professor Rasheed Abubakar, described Ogun State as the education capital of Africa.

It is not a bad idea that Amosun, in his wisdom, has allowed the Ogun West district of the state to share part of the glory. From a sleepy town, Ipokia is being turned into an education city with all its apparent domino effects.

The following photos have brought home the graphic details of the irreversible developments on the site of new poly.
