A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Benjamin Umudjoro has called on the Police authorities to arraign and charge Sergeant Olowojoyin Abolade of Iponri Division who killed Yusuff Omole Oladipo, and Inspector Monday of the Iju-Ishaga Division who murdered Dele Sodipo, with murder.

This, he said, will serve as deterrent to other trigger-happy policemen in the country. Umudjoro made the call while reacting to P.M.NEWS’ story on Dele Sodipo.

“I was moved to tears when I read your story published on Monday 28 September in which a 30- year-old man, Dele Sodipo, was reportedly shot by a policeman, Inspector Monday attached to Iju Ishaga, Division. This is a case of senseless murder.

Nobody has the right to kill except such person has been prosecuted in court and sentenced to death. Even then, it doesn’t stop there. A committee of prerogative, headed by a State Attorney General will sit on such cases and make recommendations to the governor for action.

These days, governors don’t sign the death warrant of some of these convicted criminals, so they remain in prison for years.

Generally, the right to live is sacrosanct the cases of those policemen per see is just a personal vendetta and they should not only be dismissed from the Nigerian Police, they should be charged with murder.
