Why The Buhari Administration Must Not Celebrate The UN Anti Corruption Day by Barondenigeria: 1:11pm On Dec 09, 2017
Since the passage of the UN convention against corruption in 2003, the international anti corruption day has been observed annually on the 9th of December by members of the united nations. It is estimated that $1trillion is paid in bribes and about $2.6trillion stolen annually through corruption. Nigeria's 2015 presidential election was won by a retired general who was involved in truncating the nation's democratic system and whose militaristic policies sent the economy comatose more than three decades ago. In a time of widespread maladministration and callous embezzlement across different sectors, General Muhammadu Buhari who polled some 53% of the total vote cast in the previous election sailed to victory on the vessel of change and anti corruption.
More than two years since his inauguration in 2015, the septuagenarian president(once accused of lacking proper academic credentials to vie for office) has lead Nigeria to its worst economic burst in 29 Years, appointing controversial cabinet members faced with corruption scandals and is accused of tribalistic and lopsided appointments. A top government official(secretary to the federal government) is accused of awarding government contracts worth over 200million naira to his firm in a controversial grass cutting scam in Nigeria's IDP camps, the country's military Chief with an annual salary of less than $100,000 Is accused of purchasing a choice mansion in Dubai for $1.5million. A task force boss(also an internationally wanted fugitive for the theft of 195 billion Naira) sacked by the previous administration was reinstated by the government, the minister for power/works/housing is alleged to have spent a whopping 78 million Naira of state money for his personal website upgrade, allegations of corruption and brutality also rock Nigeria's police force with public outcry for immediate reforms among others.
The former dictator is also accused of flagrantly violating court orders by refusing to order the release of unconvicted prisoners In what appears to be some sought of political vendetta. The opposition also accuses the government of a partial anti corruption crusade which is evident in the arrest of senior opposition party members.
Is Nigeria's president leading an anti corruption crusade or trying to silence the opposition?
