Those types of garments would go down a storm in the UK, very up to the moment, strong prints.

They look really well made.

Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by madlady(f): 6:01pm On Mar 31, 2010
Why did the buyers for the small African cloth shops in the UK stop selling stuff made in Africa, the stuff they have now hardly sells.

Most of the stuff you can get here comes from china, the styles are so dated sad.

When my sis-in-law comes back from Lagos she always brings back FANTASTIC stuff, they could almost compete with the top
UK designers.
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 6:13pm On Mar 31, 2010
Thats the problem

we have all these things but they arent great quality

china is just somewhenre thats economically efficient to produce stuff

if we can get our game on and produce our own clothes

it will be economically beneficial to us too!

imagine 20dollars to buy 20 dollar to sew

what average nigerian can afford that?
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by Ikengawo: 7:43pm On Mar 31, 2010
who said we're not producing our own clothes
and do you mean to tell me that china produces quality cloths and products only?

I wish the buyers/owners of the small  shops in the UK would go back to buying the clothing from Nigeria like they use to.

The quality and styles were 100% better than what we are getting now, I do not rate the clothing from China, they are just mass produced with no thought for quality or design.  undecided
I am sure China does make very good quality items but these owners are just buying the cheapest clothing they can get.

It must be cheaper for them, but seems a false economy, if the stock does not sell, and I don't think it does, the same stock seems
to be in the shop week after week

Yes darling they are, my sis-in-law gets them made up using the lastest, oh what's that fabric called again, I call it wax?
The fabric comes in bolts of 5/6 meters. The woman who makes them copies all the latest Paris designs.

She also buys stuff from a designer called DEOLA --- I had some bits made by this lady, expensive but wonderfully made.

Funny thing is I hate the lace stuff, too fussy for my taste.

when's the last time you were in nigeria? importing textiles is now illegal and has been for years, your even limited on the amount of clothes you're allowed to fly into the country with.
the clothes sold in nigeria are made in nigeria for the most part.

why are you fighting to make sure you don't believe that clothes are being made in nigeria when every village has someone that makes clothes?

tailored clothes are different, ankara's are different

im talkin about everyday clothing

i still went to nigeria last yr with a bunch of outfirts that i sold!

clothes made in nigeria are generally of poor quality- thats why my clothes sell soo well

if they concentrated on making good quality clothing at decent prices then we wont need to be shippin all the tyme!
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by madlady(f): 7:19am On Apr 01, 2010
^^ Oh I see every day clothing.

I meant all that lovely clothing that the Nigerian and Ghanaians use to make in abundance, I even use  some of the Ghanian hand woven fabric  for art works. They weave the fabric with your name intwined.

You are right though, most of the wax? clothing the Nigerian shop oweners sell  in the UK comes from china.

It would be wonderful if we could get some of the clothing  the @Poster's link shows, it would sell like hot cakes.
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 8:08am On Apr 01, 2010
^^ the best ones are even from holland!!

wats really sad is the fact that nigerians dont embrace thier culteral wear
]
offices demand- 'english clothes'

how are we gna make quality clothes wen we still rely on other countries??

it will be lovely if people started investing into nigeria to make real quality clothing

not the junk they send from china!
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by madlady(f): 10:16am On Apr 01, 2010
^^Yes the clothes I bought from the Nigerian shops in the UK, the wax fabric did come from Holland, then they sent the fabric to Nigeria to be made into some really FAB styles.

There was a Nigerian guy, ubber trendy he had a shop very near to my family home in Dulwich Village.
The stuff was fantastic, lots of TOP QUALITY linen that had been made up into the latest styles, with very classy embroider work.Sadly the shop rents in that section went sky high so he closed down.

I think the WHOLE market is opening up to wax fabric? trend, but in the UK it's a bit seasonal, I only wear them in the summer.

Are you saying office/white collar workers cannot wear trad wear shocked shocked, well well, I know you have some that would be way too showy but they come in so many styles.

The @Posters links shows that things are on the up, so give it time smiley
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 10:19am On Apr 01, 2010
^^ they only wear it on fridays

its consiidered 'bush' to wear it any other day

nigerians ignorans baffles me some times

we are the barriers to our own progress

even though i must add on tv, like the news they wear trad, which im very happy about

they just need to try and make it a bit more secular

remember when h&m had thier ankara print range

good times!

it was bloody expensive though!
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by Ikengawo: 8:17pm On Apr 01, 2010
If you think 'they' should make good quality clothes why dont you go make good quality clothes in nigeria?
you'll make a lot more money making it there then making it in the US, buying a 2000 dollar ticket, still paying rent in the US, and selling the shirts for 20 dollars a piece.

they make casual clothes in nigeria, there's a lot of high and low quality, like in any country.
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 1:40am On Apr 02, 2010
^^ theres no high quality anywhere!

im not into making clothes! im not a designer! neither did i study mass production!
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by Ikengawo: 6:33am On Apr 02, 2010
im not talking to you.
but you're right, there's no high quality anywhere
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by madlady(f): 7:38am On Apr 02, 2010
The the clothes shown in the 1st link look high quality to me.

If I had a business partner based in Nigeria I would defiantly think about doing business in that field.

I hope I did not say "they" anywhere in my replies undecided
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 7:44am On Apr 02, 2010
yes

she designs for the elites!

her drsses start at £200 a piece!

quality doesnt cost that much
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by madlady(f): 7:59am On Apr 02, 2010
Did you mean to  say "shouldn't" cost that much.

Well yes I agree but high end whatever, clothes, jewelry, cars,  they name their price to a point, but they do have very high overheads (well most)

Do you remember I told you I used to be a buyer, but then I fell ill.

During the 2 years I had off I started selling clothes (sold other things too) online.

The 1st things to sell were my DEOLA bits, then all my wax stuff sold.

I asked my ex bf to look into the NIGERIA side, he said it would be better to source from china, hmmm, then he went to Italy to get garments.
Re: Nigeria's Booming Fashion Industy by ayettymama(f): 8:16am On Apr 02, 2010
lolz no i didnt mean that

the elite need to wear clothes too!

im just saying normal average working class people should be able to afford quality clothes without breaking the bank

even with the money tiffany is not something ill wear- maybe momsy! grin grin

deola definitely but then again i havent seen the prices of her outfits!

who were u buyin for??

wat were ur sources?? in nigeria?? really??
