Lol. This Benin-SW matters show how tribalistic we still are. It should not be rocket science that lots of mixing happened long time ago. And continues today. I have never heard Edo people petitioning FG to make Lagos part of Edo State or vice versa. We have a problem of ignorance and pettiness in this 9ja o. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Can anyone claimed it that British own Lagos, the answer is no because they were invaders and turned to colonial master through missionary, trading and force. That applicableto Benis that invaded Aworis one of Yoruba's ethnic in Isale Eko now called Lagos Island in 16th century and forced the aborigines to be paying loyalty to Oba of Benin which ended in early 18th century, Benin can only claim Lagoon as invaders not aborigines. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

What's all this squabbles about who owns Lagos or not/. Why is that country so bitter & tribal in the things they do, say & think? The last time I checked, the Benins or Edos don't drag land with any region but rather people leave their region and state to drag land in Benin /Edo. Land nobody allocated to them. Same land you will be buried soon because nobody knows when death will come Sometimes when I look at how Nigerians worry over worthless things I just weep for that country. 3 Likes |

Bini are not the owners of Lagos but they did conquer lagos some 600 ago. It was a result of jealousy when they saw the extent of the Bini kingdom and how the oba of Lagos was afraid to sign any treaty with them, refering them to his superior at Bini that the perfidous British then sack the binis from lagos in the mid eighteen century when they carried out the first punitive expedition sending the then Oba on exile to Calabar. The sneakish yorubas from all part of yoruba land began creeping in to lay claim to Lagos. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

from history, the awori's are the original settlers in lagos. and the awori's are yorubas. at the height of their power, the benins ravaged through yoruba kingdom conquering the oyo empire and the aworis, making lagos a slave camp. the British came in, submerged the benin kingdom. this weakens the kingdom and her influence dwindled. to say the benins owned lagos is obnoxious. even looking at it geographically, lagos couldn't belong to them coz they need to pass tru the oyo empire then and the benins are nt known for their prowess of the sea-coz dat is d only logical way to settle in lag without passing tru d oyo empire. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

The Binis first discovered Lagos. The sea was used as a port of trade between them and the Portuguese. They didn't settle there until the Aworis stopped paying royalties to them after they settled there. The territory was later conquered and became an extension of Benin kingdom. The territory was then named Eko in Bini meaning war camp. 1 Like 1 Share |

Mccullum: That is falsehood! Bini never invaded Lagos at anytime in history. Bini Kingdom as polular as it was never had the military capability to invade Lagos. There is no evidence of that in a any history ( if you have one please quote). And there are no other evidence of bini conquering any kingdom like ondos, ilajes and ijebus along the way to Lagos. (so how did they get to Lagos?) But its true that Bini people came to Lagos at one time and they influence the royal culture in Lagos island only. Others like ondos, ijebus, ilajes and even ekitis/ijesha came too and settled in places like yaba, ido But People have been in Lagos before all these people Lagos of that time was not rich and important like now. The white man made Lagos prosperous. So it was not so economical important to close militaly empires like dahomey and Oyo empire to invade. 1 Like |

Re: I Never Said Benin Owned Lagos – Oba Akiolu by Nobody: 11:26am On Dec 12, 2017 |
let me state something categorically here An awori man may claim not be Yoruba because only Yoruba of Oyo orgin were classified as Yoruba pre-colonial era. The definition of Yoruba today however is different. Yorubas today are people who trace their origin to ife, or clans who share cultural identity with the Oyo Yoruba. Awori can not deny their ife origin. Read the story of ife Togo to clarify your doubt. For those misinforming themselves about Benin empire destroy or fighting Oyo Yoruba, they seriously need to read historical facts. Oyo empire was never invaded by benins. Awori, ikale and ilaje land later invaded by binis was never under the control of Oyo empire. Intact, it was rumored that bini invaded Lagos through proxies. it invaded Lagos with army officials and officials stationed in ikale ( ondo ) and ishekiri land. Places closer to Lagos than Benin state, but which bini people never claim. |
