The challenge with the foundation of Gospel propagation in Africa started with how the gospel was preached to our fore fathers, imagine your self as a preacher who got to a city embattled with diseases, sicknesses, pain, cultures and traditions that carries with it death expressions in various forms. The best gospel to preach is the gospel of escape from such – the gospel of heaven.
This kind of gospel guarantees hope for people living in such condition meaning that their suffering is all but for a while, this is the reason the early believers are so much keen on making heaven that they isolate their sect from the community by doing things differently, not knowing that the focus of God is an emergence of his kingdom right here on the earth, as evidence of this is seen in the Lord’s prayer.
Series of waves of doctrines and theologies has swept across the nation Nigeria, and in the recent times the Lord is granting us mercy to understand the true essence of the gospel by increasing the depth of truth made available to us.
The church is a dynamic body not a stable body, meaning entities of the church must be willing to change with new lights, for Israelites to adopt the God their father served, the same God they forgot due to their prolonged slavery in Egypt, they must first hear the gospel of liberty, for liberty is the first operation that must be done. Meaning a man under one master (the government of Egypt) cannot be in allegiance with another master (the government of God). So God had to first deliver them from their bondage in Egypt, from the laws of Egypt before he took them through the process of receiving his own laws.
For Nigeria church, the Lord had to use the English missionaries to deliver us first from our own laws (traditional, cultural, societal etc.) before he can take us through the process of receiving his own laws, but the Nigeria church thought the deliverance was meant as an escape from hell (physically) into heaven (physical heaven), so an idea of a better places where there’s no suffering nor pains seems an option that cannot be resisted, a guarantee of eternal security from death, pains and destruction.
Later a new light came which defined that there are some attributes that must be possessed physically to guarantee and secure a place in the physical location called heaven, ergo the birth of SU movements, and now we are seeing light of both deliverance as not from the physical alone, but also in the soul, and heaven not just a physical location, but as a heritage of kingdom children – sons of God.
God is interested in taken us to heaven, but before God deliver us from these pains, struggles deaths, etc. through eternity (heaven), he must first liberate our souls from these pains, struggles and deaths etc., this is because our souls being in the fallen state was what birth the physical death and pains, dangerous cultural and traditions initially, so heaven as painted for our fore fathers was a hope of liberation (salvation) from physical Bottlenecks, but the gospel is actually a hope for salvation from spiritual and souls bottlenecks so that we can serve God in the liberty of the Spirit, then eventually leads us to the place where our souls can birth good cultures, traditions and society (a place of rest, where God is in charge of everything man Does).
At this hour, the church in Nigeria must begin so see the dynamism in the gospel and see into the light of the essence of salvation, that is, we are saved (new birth) first to deliver us from the bondage of darkness over our spirit, then our liberty in Spirit can now begin to inspire us through the Gospel truth we receive daily onto good works.
A good point to note is that the gospel is dynamic and not static, it’s a process of redemption of the soul and not a ticket to heaven (the new birth is the ticket to heaven), also the dynamism of the gospel means that the gospel truth is revealed over time by the Spirit of the new man (the Holy Spirit) , and we must be ready to change with it, flow with it, and live by it.
Also, we should not blame those who are not flowing with, for people are products of the light they have received do far. So rather fighting and blaming early believers on some issues, we should rather pray that entrance into essence of the gospel may be granted to all and sundry.
