Will driverless cars create or kill jobs?
As driverless vehicles proliferate, what happens to jobs that currently require a human behind the wheel? Nearly 5 million Americans fit into that category, according to a new SF Chronicle study, using Bureau of Labor Statistics and other data. Globally, the number crosses 100 million. As autonomous vehicles become more reliable, these jobs — trucking, driving taxis or delivery vans, etc. — could be under threat. But experts point out that self-driving cars could create new jobs, as in-car services (manicures, massages, even mobile health care) become realistic.
