In February 1956, the Queen visited Nigeria. On her return to Britain, a guard honour comprised of West African officer cadets studying at the Prestigious Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, were assembled to recieve the Queen and her family(husband prince Philip and their two kids, Prince Charles and Princess Ann)

From Left to Right:- Cadet Madiebo, Cadet Gowon, Cadet Addo (Ghana), Cadet Ejoor

Madiebo, Gowon and Ejoor are all still alive and their 80's.

Major General Alexander Madiebo. A native of Awka in present day Anambra, Madiebo was Gowon's course mate at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. They both passed out in December of 1956. Madiebo joined the artillery corps. When Ojukwu declared Biafra, he promoted Madiebo to Major General and appointed him Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Biafran Army. At the end of the war, Madiebo flew out with Ojukwu into exile. In 1980,he wrote the most famouse book about the war called "The Nigerian Revolution And The Biafran War". Madiebo is retired and lives in Enugu.

Major General Yakubu Gowon
Gowon passed out of Sandhurst in December 1956 along other Nigerians such as Alexander Madiebo and Patrick Anwunah. In January 1966, the first coup occured which led to the deaths of Brigadier Maimalari, Colonel Kur Mohammed, Lt Colonel Pam and Lt Colonel Lagema. This suddenly made Gowon the highest ranking Northerner in the Nigerian Army. Because of this, the new Military President, General Ironsi, appointed Lt Colonel Gowon as Chief of Army staff. When the counter coup by Northern elements happend 6 months later, Gowon became head of state. He was overthrown in the mid 70's by Brigadier Murtala Mohammed.

Major General David Ejoor
Ejoor was a year ahead of Gowon and Madiebo at Sandhurst. He passed out in January 1956 and was preparing to return to Nigeria when he was asked to stay back to recieve the Queen on her return from Nigeria. Ejoor returned to Nigeria a few days after this picture. Ejoor narrowly escaped death during the January 1966 coup. He was then appointed Military Governor of the Mid-West Region. He was in this position when Biafran Soldiers invaded the  Mid-West and drove him away. Ejoor came back to Lagos were he became part of Gowons Military council. He was later appointed Chief of Army Staff(COAS) by Gowon. Ejoor and Gowon were both retired when Brigadier Murtala Mohammed overthrew the regime.
