Onitsha mall now.
Agulu lake (Golden Tulip) now

Obiano could have abandoned these projects as other Nigerian governors do. Or even start his own malls.
If Obiano completes the Nnewi and Awka malls tomorrow, he deserves the credit and not who flagged them off without money or even a great plan to build them.

For instance, Look at the silly design of Nnewi mall to have a car park on the roof without seriously considering the serious financial implication of such design would make the mall un-affordable to build by a state government. If they were smart at all, they would have make the car park on the ground floor and use the top floor for the mall and it would have been a great plan without building such pillars used for bridges in order to carry a suspended parking lot. Only Julius Berger can build that type of structure in Nigeria and it will not tragically collapse because they have the technical ability. Those indigenous companies used by Peter Obi cannot dare such projects or it will collapse and kill people inside the mall.

Yyeske:
Stop equating what you see around Upper Iweka and Iweka road as being same all over Onitsha. Have you seen the new plazas springing up around Main market and other places?
Which money is rushing into Enugu that is not rushing into 3-3 Onitsha, Obosi, Ogidi, Oba, Nsugbe, and Ozubulu as we speak except you are trying to be mischievous.
What do you say about Ogui, Asata, Coal camp, Iva valley etc all in Enugu since you claimed Sullivan cleaned up the place?

Read carefully. I equated cleaning up a place to development. Iweka Road is a key commercial road in Onitsha just like Okpara Avenue in Enugu. When Chime cleaned it up, put pavements, traffic lights the new buildings that sprung up were classy. Similarly just look at the refurbished expressway Obiano expanded in Awka you see banks, hotels, decent buildings springing up there.

My thing is that ANSG needs to do the same rescue plan for Iweka Road, Zik Avenue which clearly are high traffic commercial roads because of the markets. If they can do a surgical operation on the market spaces and make it more attractive then it will change the look of those places.

For example if you take some of the Asian or European street shopping districts the main road leading to them are kept no parking zones for vehicles. They have bus parks and car parks at least 1 km away. Those high streets have pedestrian pavements. Then when you get to the market it's off roads are paved and kept completely vehicle free for pedestrians, Stalls are neatly organized and clean, they put in signs, street lights, conveniences and security.

Osinbajo in Anambra, extols Obiano’s efforts in building business friendly state

Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo Thursday lauded the efforts of Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano in creating a viable state through creation of enabling environment for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

The acting president was at Onitsha for the MSME clinic, sponsored by the federal government in collaboration with the state government, where he addressed the business community and heads of agencies and parastatals of the federal government.

He stated that Anambra remained the industrial and commercial hub of Nigeria, and that the federal government was committed to working with the state government to create better life for business owners.

“This clinic, which was brought to Anambra is a demonstration to the commitment of the federal government to help businesses grow in Anambra.

“It is my first time in Anambra since the governor won reelection, but of course I have been here before, and I took time to visit manufacturers in Onitsha and Nnewi notably.

“MSME may be small, but they account for a large percentage of business activities in the country. That is why we are ready to support them. I am particularly happy with what your governor is doing with the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA), where he gives loans to small businesses. We will partner with him to do better,” Osinbajo said.

He also stated that the idea of the business clinic was to bring together business owners on one hand, and agencies and parastatals on the other hand, so that business men would have the opportunity to interact with the agencies without travelling long way to access information.

Speaking on the ease of accessing loans and other facilities, Osinbajo said that the federal government was well aware of the hardship faced by business men in doing their business, and has taken steps to make certain facilities easier to access.

He said business registration that previously took so long to be precessed could now be done withing 48 hours, while loans that took several months can now be done within two months, attributing the success to the business clinic created by the federal government.

Earlier, Chief Obiano had thanked the Federal government for the vision behind the clinic, and the decision to bring it to Anambra state.

He said certain characteristics stood the Anambra businessman out, and they included their doggedness, industry, independence and hatred for failure.

Obiano said his government had done much with ASBA, and that if helped by the federal government through its agencies, “Anambra can leap frog Nigeria to an emerging economy.”

He added that, “We are doing so much here, but we need the critical support of the federal government.”

The event was attended by heads of agencies and Parastatals, including Bank of Industry, Raw Materials Research and Development Council, among others. Captains of industries, especially from Anambra State also graced the ocassion.

Osinbajo took time to visit the stands of various companies, who exhibited their products during the clinic, and commended their ingenuity.

LAGOS, ANAMBRA, KADUNA, 8 OTHERS BEGIN PENSION REMITTANCE INTO WORKERS’ RSA

source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/05/lagos-kaduna-9-others-begin-pension.html

Having fully commenced the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), 11 states have kick-started pension remittance into the Retirement Saving Accounts (RSAs) of their workers, Eyes Of Lagos has learnt. This includes the remittances of both the employees and employers portion of the monthly pension contribution into the RSAs of civil servants across the concerned states.

The states are: Lagos, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Kaduna, Delta, Anambra, Jigawa, FCT, Edo and Ekiti states. While the states are still using the 15 per cent old monthly contribution shared at 7.5 per cent each between an employee and an employer,

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that none of the states across the country have commenced the new 18 per cent monthly contribution of which an employer contributes 10 per cent while an employee contributes eight per cent, as prescribed in the Pension Reforms Act (PRA) 2014. Moreover, Zamfara, Kebbi and Rivers states are only remitting employee’s portion while Imo, Benue, Kwara, Bauchi and Niger states are states with remittances from self-funded agencies.

Thirteen states, comprising of Adamawa, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kano, Kogi, Nasarawa, Oyo, Sokoto, Taraba and Abia States have enacted laws, but are yet to commence remittance. However, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross-Rivers, Katsina, Kwara, Plateau and Akwa-Ibom states are at bill stage in their respective state houses of assembly.

Yobe remains the only state that is yet to commence any process towards the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Speaking at a workshop organised by the National Pension Commission (PenCom) for journalists in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state, at the weekend, company’s secretary/legal Adviser, PenCom, Mr. Mohammad Sanni Mohammad, said some states have enacted the law but are having remittance issues, while 16 states have not enacted law and appropriation not made. Stating that PenCom cannot prosecute the defaulting states but can only persuade, he said, the federal system of government being operating in the country has limited the commission’s power to prosecute states that are non-compliant to the CPS.

For the CPS to become effective in states, he said, the states must first of all, domesticate it in their respective state by-laws, after which necessary appropriation must be made to fully key into the new pension scheme. He pointed out that some states are having challenges to pay salaries of their workers, hence, defaulting in the prompt pension remittance of their workers, adding that, the commission is doing everything possible to persuade more states to join the new pension scheme.

However, the new president, Pension Fund Operators of Nigeria (PenOp), Mrs. Aderonke Adedeji, urged workers both in the public and private sectors, to mount pressure on their employers to remit their pension as and when due, noting that, until workers fight for themselves, dubious employers will continue to evade pension remittance of their employees. Earlier, Mr. Ibrahim Shehu Kangiwa, of the Investment Supervision Department of PenCom, announced that Multi-fund Structure of RSA Funds will commence July 1, 2018, having amended and released the Regulation on Investment of Pension Fund Assets to Pension Fund Operators on April 18, 2017.

This new provisions in the regulation, he stressed, took immediate effect, except the Implementation of Multi-Fund Structure for RSA Funds which would commence later in the year. The implementation of the RSA Multi-Fund Structure, he said, was delayed to allow adequate public sensitisation and education, noting that, the main objective of the RSA Multi-Fund Investment structure, is to resolve the challenge of Asset-Liability risk management experienced by Pension Funds. This, he pointed out, would be achieved by better aligning the risk and return expectations of Contributors, better matching of pension assets and liabilities and diversification of pension fund portfolios, as minimum limits are set for aggregate investments in variable income securities, for each Fund.

To implement this multi-fund, he said, Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) would be required to provide contributors with information on the benefits and risks of the various Funds, prior to approving any change, the Commission and PFAs would embark on Public Enlightenment / Sensitization Campaign prior to commencement date. “PFAs are currently carrying out the necessary in-house system upgrades and processes to ensure a robust IT system for the Multi-Fund.

The introduction of the Multi-Fund investment structure for RSA Funds would address the varying risk appetite of Contributors, as the different Funds are tailored to fit the ages and risk profiles of Contributors,” he stated. To him, expanding the scope of allowable investment instruments and Fund classes available to Contributors would also improve returns on pension funds, as minimal limits have been set for variable income instruments which generally yield higher returns over a given period.

Onitsha Shoprite Idles Away
By Dipo Olowookere on August 19, 2016
onitsha shoprite

It was set up to compete with other shopping malls in Awka and Nnewi. But the shopping mall in Onitsha, housing Shoprite is not being patronised. Reason? The people have so many markets that offer cheaper prices as Okegwo Kenechukwu in Onitsha, reports,

In fairness to the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, there was no doubt that he had the desire to make Anambra State a megacity to reckon with in Nigeria and beyond.

To some people, he was the Messiah who turned the fortune of the state around but to some, Obi came on a business voyage with an overriding interest to explore and exploit all avenues of untapped mineral and material resources of the state.

Among the enterprise of the former governor that are visible are the Sab Milla Breweries, makers of Hero beer, the non-functioning Orient Petroleum Resources and the Shopping Mall complexes sited in the three business zones of Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi. Although, the Orient Petroleum Resources in Umuoba Anam in Anambra West and Ayamelum Area is yet to commence production, over 85 per cent of the people of South East hailed the venture because it launched the state into the membership of oil producing states in Nigeria but since the completion and commissioning of the shopping mall in Onitsha on April 14 , 2016, by the present Governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano, the Shoprite, which people thought would dwarf others in the South East zone has remained deserted, contrary to the expectation of the people.

This, according to inhabitants of the commercial city was because it was a misplaced economic venture.

Investigation has also shown that while the ones in Awka and Nnewi are at different stages of activities, that of Onitsha has remained deserted and a ghost of itself Onitsha Shopping Mall, according to them was located at the former Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Station office in Onitsha, inside the heart land of the commercial city to draw the expected customers that would patronize it to stand the test of time from within and around the city.

Investigation revealed that so many reasons have been adduced for the poor patronage of the business, while some believed that the location of the mall was ab initio, a subject of controversy between the people of Onitsha and Anambra State government on one side and the ABS on the other. Some alleged that the Onitsha people leased the land to the then Anambra State when one Chief Boniface Offorkaja was the General Manager of the Anambra Broadcasting Corporation in the early 1980s and as such, was a subject of controversy.

Meanwhile, a random opinion conducted by our correspondent showed that most people in the commercial city have little or no time to go to the mall for shopping which according to them was luxury for the wealthy people and not the lower income earners and business men. “Oga, that thing no go work for Onitsha oh.

Who get time to go there to buy tomatoes or yam when you can pick it in Ose Okwuodu market at a cheaper price? They are just wasting their time. For me, I will not even go there unless I am going for site seeing” “Well, I think the idea of citing a shopping mall in the city is a wise one and a step in right direction”, said another trader “but my fear was that it may not survive competition.

You see Onitsha is a commercial city and everywhere in and around the town, you find open one market or the other. There is nothing you can find in that place that you cannot find along the street of Onitsha, even at a cheaper rate,” said a trader in the city.

“Another one is the level of literacy in the commercial city” a commercial motorcyclist said. “Most of the people here are traders that deal with one good or the other. They have all varieties of the commodity around them.

“There are no universities or other higher institutions either from where the students can come to make shopping like that one in Enugu State and the level of government institutions in Onitsha is quite low. I doubt if it will survive.” However the general opinion about the Shoprite is that the apathy already shown by the people and the investment made by the owners of the Shoprite could have been channelled into other ventures.

He is very right about Onitsha Mall but that is assuming you are targeting Onitsha residents as shoppers. What if you target those coming INTO Onitsha to shop at its many markets? Onitsha Mall from that standpoint would then have an edge over many of the informal malls because it is organized and has conveniences. Supposing they target large WHOLESALE retailers particularly in the following areas:

- Building Materials
- Textiles
- Electrical Parts
- Auto Spares
- Pharmaceutical wholesale

...and complement them by putting in those large open space areas a banking hall and a food court.

Then you would hive off some of the customers going to Ogidi Building materials, those going to New Parts, those going to Obosi and those going to Main Market.

Oboy I don't know how you see or feel about Onitsha, What is wrong with us? You just posted a useless report written by a Yoruba man three months after the mall opened in Onitsha, Onitsha mall is doing great, ACDA the developer is not complaining, Shoprite also not complaining, many stores has opened in Onitsha mall, not every Onitsha residents shop in those markets you listed, many of our elites, visitors and rich around Onitsha and neighbouring towns prefer Onitsha mall, mind you we have many expatriates in Onitsha, Nnewi and what have you, Black & white when they came initially they rented one space now they've doubled their space many residents prefer where they will get quality services.PEP just open few months ago there, I hope you know construction of Next mall will commence soon in Onitsha, they acquired land around Zik's house by Borrowmeo round about.

2016 report, same year the mall opened, was reported by a Yoruba dude.
The most foolish thing the promoters of Onitsha Mall will do is to think people will just go there and start shopping, why don't they market the place.

Onitsha Mall don't advertise on TV, no radio advert, no print or online advert and they expected people to go and shop in a death place.

When Joedon Shopping Mall was still reigning they advertise all the time on Minaj and people were patronizing them.
Information is the key, Onitsha Mall is too isolated, they don't even advertise on Facebook like Game and Palms Shopping Malls do, they just lock up thinking people will know them.
They should invest in marketing communications abegiiiii

Of course Onitsha is twice more populated than Enugu, Awka and Abakaliki combined. Enugu is more spread out because it has good dual carriage roads leading to the outskirts of town for a very long time. Onitsha only had the Enugu-Onitsha express way and that is why development was on that axis. The Onitsha -Owerri road was just dualized less than 10 years ago and it has helped a lot. People moved to Asaba because Onitsha became impossible to expand due to lack of major dual carriage roads away from the city.

The 33 (Trans-Nkisi) road to Umuleri needs to be dualized too ASAP. Obiano promised that during his re-election campaign. We have to see if that promise is kept. It will help decongest Onitsha and make living in the northern axis of the city a feasible option for the state. Dualization of the 33 (Trans-Nkisi) road from Onitsha to Umuleri or Aguleri will be the single greatest contribution of Obiano to the development of Anambra state.
the governor made it clear that he dualize major roads in Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi. The roads his mentioned in Onitsha metropolis are 33 Nsugbe Otuocha road, Atani road Idemmili Odekpe axis, Oguta road and Awka road etc

ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY MOVES TO ENACT LAW TO PROHIBIT HAWKING OF DRUGS

By Henrietta Madichie

Awka, May 4, 2018 (MOI) Anambra State House of Assembly on May 3 passed a motion making it an offence to hawk drug on streets or markets in the state.

Leading the debate, member representing Awka South1 Constituency, Nnamdi Okafor said the bill sought to stop such hawking since the drugs might not have been tested nor the source and content known.

Okafor said that any drug advertisement should obtain advert permit and license from National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC).

``Get an outlet or location if you must practice where the manufacturer can be traced. In case of adverse effects, the manufacturer can be easily traced,” he said.

The member representing Anambra East, Obinna Emeneka maintained that some of these drugs could be sub-standard as they did not pass through accelerated testing to forecast how they could work on the body.

More so, Mr Emenaka emphasised that these hawkers expose these drugs to the sun, causing degradation of the drugs, thus, harming the body especially the liver and kidney.

At the end of the debate, the Speaker of the House Rita Mmaduagwu called for voice vote and then, the bill was referred to two committees to report back in two weeks.

The two committees were House committee on Health and House committee on Judiciary; for professionalism, legal issues and objectivity for a positive and sound input before final passage into law. (MOI)

This is why I advocate for government to involve church administrators in the running of all critical public infrastructure - education, healthcare, transport, waste management, works, markets, urban planning. You would probably not see the incompetence, corruption that is the hallmark of public service.

We are trying but the economy doesn't have a road map. Different development everywhere but the destination is lacking.

More so, environment in Anambra state is poorly maintained. Government needs to do more in that area. Anambra is the richest state in the east but the government always fall behind the enterprising nature of the igbos. With billions of naira every month, Anambra state hasn't caught up with its citizens in development. It's a pity that the people are faster than the government in critical planning and thinking.

The government do not need high igr to succeed but he just needs good management skills. Manage your numerous big boys to build a bigger economy.

Advertise multibillion naira projects with economic advantage and make these big boys invest in them. This alone will catapult Anambra to the level of the biggest cities in the world.

We don't need Indians, Chinese and others to create a big economy in the east. The heart of the economy should be in the hands of the people. Give the oil magnates an alternative business that makes as much profit as oil and other people too.

We can build a state of our choice if only we decide to build it.
