As you gear up with jingles and holly, it’s important to keep your home and workplace a safe and fire-free environment. Here are few tips on how to avoid fire outbreak this holiday season.

Don’t overload electrical outlets
Electrical fires are common in office spaces that have larger equipment (like copiers, many computers, etc.). While it’s alright to be festive for the season, mind how many cords are leading to each socket and calculate the wattage from the outlet or extension cord.

Use non-flammable decorations
During this festive period, you would want to decorate your home or office to get in the holiday season spirit. Make use of non-flammable decorations because if a fire were to occur, this will minimize the amount of flammable items such as wreaths, garland, etc.

Check lights and decorations for frayed wires
Frayed wires could catch fire easily and spread throughout the strand of lights quickly. As a general room, you should also only link a maximum of three strands of lights together.

Never open presents near a lit fireplace
Wrapping paper is extremely flammable and can ignite suddenly and cause a flash fire. Some types of wrapping paper also contain material that can produce sparks or create a dangerous chemical build up in the air of your house.

Turn off all lights each night and every weekend
Be sure to turn any holiday light off when you go out for the evening or when you go to bed. Try using an outdoor timer to switch lights on and off. Never leave holiday lights on for extended unattended periods of time.
