A few years ago, there was a story nearly every week on the front page of Nairaland about how the Muslims of Sudan were brutally oppressing the Christians in the southern part of the country. The sustained propaganda paid off - a referendum was held and the Christian country of South Sudan was born on 9 July 2011

However the country plunged into a brutal war two years later and has continued to set records of infamy. Ironically the carnage in the country has been treated on Nairaland and elsewhere in the continent like the abhorrent proclivities of a family member - with conspiracy of silence

There have been stories of the unnerving brutalities and outrageous depravity by both rebels and government forces.
People forced to jump into fire; bodies drained of blood and people forced to drink the blood or eat human flesh
Fighters paid by rape; boys castrated
Civilians declaring that facing soldiers is a scarier prospect than encounter with crocodiles
The hitherto much-hated Muslim Sudan has provided succour to many fleeing the fighting among their fellow christians

The problem will not go away simply because the propagandists of a few years ago are too embarrassed to admit that the country needs help. The country does - real human beings are facing utterly terrifying experiences every day. We cannot afford to keep quiet

The latest news is the forced rape of relatives

UN human rights experts say they are deeply disturbed by what they describe as atrocities committed by all sides in the conflict in South Sudan.

Following a 12-day visit, they said the deprivation and range of sexual violence were hard to describe.

Young men said they were gang-raped or forced to rape relatives while family members looked on. Several soldiers raped a 60-year-old woman and left her for dead.

People had to eat leaves from trees because there was no food.
The experts were told nearly everyone in South Sudan has a gun, resulting in an increase in deaths, which they described as a silent killing.

The catalogue of horror comes just a day after South Sudan's warring parties signed a ceasefire.

All previous deals to end the four years of fighting have disintegrated.
