POISONING – SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT WEEK 3
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
ACIDS, INORGANIC CORROSIVE
Including hydrochloric (spririts of salt), nitric and sulphuric (oil of vitriol).
Burning of lips, mouth and tongue; pain in digestive tract; intense thirst; dysphagia, nausea and vomiting, rapid and feeble pulse, clammy skin, shallow and difficult respiration, collapse, convulsions possible.
TREATMENT
Do not use stomach tube or emetics. Administer magnesia, cream of magnesia, lime water, soap solution; followed by milk, egg albumen, olive oil or barley water. Morphine for pain. Alkaline carbonate (chalk, whiting, magnesium carbonate, sodium carbonate, etc.) may be used in an emergency but are better avoided, if possible, in poisoning by concentrated acids, since they liberate CO2 which may cause gastic distension and perhaps perforation.
