1995 World footballer of the year, George Oppong Weah has emerged as the new President of Liberia 90minutesgoal.com reports. Weah defeated his closest rival Joseph Boakai who is presently the Vice president to president Elen Johnson Sirleaf.

Weah who played as a striker is regarded as one of the finest talent to have emerged from the continent of Africa. He was named Africa footballer of the year in 1989, 1994 and 1995 becoming the first player to do so.

In 1995 George Weah became the first player from Africa to receive the FIFA World Player of the Year and also the Ballon d'Or.

He contested the Presidential election in 2005 and lost due to accusations from his political opponents citing his lack of formal education as a handicap to his ability to lead the country.

In 2011, George Weah contested for a seat in the Liberian senate and defeated Robert Sirleaf, the son of the current President Mrs Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

A deadly striker who scored goals for fun, Weah was discovered by Arsene Wenger who brought him to Monaco. He scored 17 goals in his first season in Monaco.
