President MuhammaduBuhari Friday in Abuja said hisadministration willnot restin continually reviewing andstrengthening ongoing reforms in theagriculturalsector untilNigeria regainsits prideofplace as a foodexporting country.
He made this known through his SSAon Media andPublicity, Garba Shehu viaFemi Adesina’s facebook handle.
Receiving theAllProgressives Congress (APC) family from Kebbi State in the Presidential Villa, the President said about 90percent of some food imports intothe country, which usually gulped the country’s foreign exchange reserve, had been sliced, with Nigeria now targeting self-sufficiency in foodp roduction.
“We are not doing badly in the agricultural sectorand Nigerians, and theworld,are beginning to appreciate our efforts. We will notbe satisfied;we will work harderuntil we start exporting food.
“We are happythat rice andbeans importation into the countryhave gone down by90percent,and visibly everyone can see how productive states likeKebbi have turned outto be andstates like Lagos, Ogun and Ebonyiarefollowingthe example,’’ hesaid.
He said Kaduna, Katsina andSokotostates hadalready reported remarkableturn aroundin the agricultural sector, withmore youths taking interest in entrepreneurship.
The Presidentsaid hedisagreed with the astronomical food import billpresented by theCentral BankofNigeria (CBN) from the inceptionoftheadministration, pointing out that itwas laterdiscoveredto be “fraudulent practices’’ by someofthe elites to depletethe foreign reserves.
“When I wastoldthat the CBN had no savingsafterthe windfallofsellingoilfor more than$100 dollars perbarrel for many years, and theproduction was2.1 billion barrelperday, I did notbelieve them.
“I did not believe thembecause majorityof Nigerians cannotaffordimported food; they relyonwhat is locallygrown. It turned outthat 50percentofthe exportbills were fraudulent. That is what the Nigerianelites did.
“Unfortunately, we will notknowallthat happenedbecause theelitesworkedin collusion withinstitutionsin developed countries, likeinsurance firms and other financial outfits,to perpetuatethe fraud,’’ headded.
Onsecurity,PresidentBuhari said the return offarmersto their farmlandsin the North East, with glaringresultsofhigh yields, was a testimonyto therelative peacethat had beenachieved.
He assured that morewouldbe doneto checkthe mayhem ofsuicideattacks.
The Presidentsaid hisadministration will put in moreeffort to reposition the educational andhealth sectorsto compete withotherglobal institutions.
Inhisremarks, the KebbiState Governor, AtikuBagudusaid theAPCfamilywas pleasedwith the performance ofthe administration in securingthecountry, revivingthe economy andfighting corruption.
Baguduandmembers ofthe delegation, which includethe MinisterofJusticeand AttorneyGeneral ofthe Federation, Abubakar Malami and former PDP stalwarts in KebbiState,alsoprayed for the quick recovery ofthe President’s son, Yusuf.
